My wife and I stayed here for five nights, and enjoyed both the environment and the convenient location for exploring the island. The hostel was clean and well cared for, but what made the experience was the other travelers. We frequently cooked extra food for them and were cooked for in return (fried bananas with ice cream!), and people often ended up helping each other out on cleanup.
We were more than a little shocked at the number of negative reviews that we read after our stay, centering mostly on the manager (Maikiki). He IS quirky with a penchant for walking around shirtless (this is Hawaii after all), but in our five days we never saw him treat another guest (singles or couples) with anything but respect. If you're into the drunken party scene though, stay away- if you rile all the other guests you're likely to find yourself shown the door.
In our experience, you'll get out of this place what you put in. If you meet Maikiki and start asking about all the negative things you might have read, odds are you'll get what you came looking for. Everyone we met came in with a laid-back, considerate attitude and seemed to get along fine.
Only complaint- roosters that wake you up at 5am. Seems to be a common problem on the island.
