We just returned from a week in Kauai. I choose the Islander because it was within the Pleasant Holidays network and was priced just at our limit. I would not return to the hotel for a number of reasons. They have a 3pm check in and our room wasn’t ready until 4pm. This wouldn’t have been such a big deal but we arrived early at 12:30 pm hoping to unpack and relax.

Our room had an ocean view and was on the second floor. Pack light as there are no elevators. This I knew before hand but was hoping for a bell person would maybe help. There are none. It seems most of the rooms have tiles floors throughout as did ours. We found this to be unpleasant. The floor is always damp even with the AC on. Getting out of bed at night and walking on a damp floor is not enjoyable. There is only one bedside table with a lamp. It had a florescent bulb as did the kitchenette light. I don’t like florescent bulbs as they not warm feeling. The TV and AC worked fine. We liked the kitchenette. There was a long wait for hot water in the bathroom sink and shower. My wife had some insect bites she claims were from bedbugs. I had none so we will consider this a wash. We brought our own aerosol air freshener. It was missing from the room after day one. Housekeeping could not locate it. The front desk was helpful in trying to accommodate us.

We didn’t use the hotel beach or pool so I can’t comment. Most of beaches we drove to were much better than the hotels. I think you can find better “value” hotels on Kauai than the Islander.

My now husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon July 6 through July 17, 2008, and we absolutely loved it! First, we had originally booked an ocean view room, but knowing it was our honeymoon they upgraded us to oceanfront. We were about 20 yards from the ocean. They gave us champagne and chocolates as a "present" and treated us wonderfully. The poolside bar was fabulous with absolutely amazing happy hour drinks. The beach at the resort is great as well. The Islander on the Beach is right behind the Coconut Marketplace which has some great restaurants, shopping, and activities. My only "complaint" was that the resort doesn't have room service. However, to make up for it the rooms have little kitchen areas complete with coffeemaker, microwave, and minifridge. They also stock dishes, dish soap, and a sponge for use in the "kitchen sink."

We travel a lot, and I have to say this was the most bang for our buck that we have ever received. I absolutely loved it, and should we ever return to Kauai we will most definitely stay there again.

Management response from pineapplepapaya, General Manager
(Management representative)
Aug 11, 2008
We would love to give everyone an early check in, unfortunately, check out is 12 noon and we make every effort to have rooms ready by 3pm.
We fully understand the desire to have carpets on the floor, the selection on tile was based on the ease of care for the flooring.
The lighting has been corrected with energy efficient light bulbs and a lamp next to the bed.

I never got to go to Kauai and stay due to the fact that one of the two airlines I was to take, I found, was bankrupt. This fully cancelled my itinerary. Not to mention, me not finding out until 2 days prior to my departure. When I called to explain the situaiton, I found that I had to give 60 days notice!!!! So, basically I got screwed big time, and since this situaiton arised, the notice to cancel has been risen to 90 days!!! How outrageous!! I won't be staying at the Islander if I ever make it to Hawaii in my future travels. Just a fair warning......

My husband and I went to hawaii on may 26. We went to The Big Island, Maui and Kauai. Looking back Kauai was by far my favorite,Islander on the Beach was perfect. We had a ocean front room, which was perfect In fact we had a monk seal visit just yards from our lanai. OUR NEXT TRIP WILL NOT DOUBT BE TO THE ISLANDER ON THE BEACH......The front desk staff is excellent....If you need anything, info or advice call and ask for Ann. She was a God send to us while we were trying to make reversations from Ms.
GO TO THE ISLANDER STAY OCEANFRONT, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

It was 8 years since my last stay in Kauai and this was meant to be a romantic weekend with my girlfriend. Some negative reviews about this affordable hotel had me worried as we departed for our short 3 days in Kauai, but I soon found out that those negative reviews were unwarrented from our experience. The condition of the hotel is good to very good. The exterior and landscaping is clean and well maintained. The pool area is small, but sufficient for the size of hotel. Our room which was on the second floor above the lobby with an Ocean view was outstanding. The room looked to have been remodeled in the last 5 years. Modern Hawaii themed decor, tiled flooring, A/C, TV with good cable station selection, CD player / Radio / IPod plug in via USB, Mini Fridge, Microwave, 1 Queen sized bed, 1 sofa with pull out bed, and 1 floor style cot was provided with the room. The room far exceeded my expecations for the price we paid. The hotel is situated on a back road with another 5 hotels and the Coconut Marketplace. The Coconut Marketplace is literally a walk through the parking lot (which is small, maybe too small for the hotel). It is about a 10 min drive from the Airport. Since we had such a short time we didn't spend much time at the hotel during the day. A trip to Poipu took about 30 mins and it was about the same on our way up to Hanalei Bay the next day. I'd suggest this hotel to anyone that is seeking a good deal, a comfortable room, and a great location for exploring the island.
