I had made a reservation but the front desk couldnt find it when I arrived. Room was available, so I stayed. When returning home to Europe I found that my credit card was charged for 1 night upon reservation in addition to the complete fare upon checkout. Management refuses refund and ignores my complaint. Amount is too small to bring to court.

some more:
Staff was unable to make the phone work. Loud construction work in the building, was stopped at 7 p.m. after complaints. Sewage canal flowing into the ocean directly next to the hotel.

I call it "Coral Rip-off"

Stayed one night at this hotel after our week at the condo was up. Did not have high expectations given the poor review in the Ultimate Kauai guide book. Boy were we suprised! The oceanfront rooms seems to have been recently redone, and everything in the room looks new.

The view out the back is amazing! Actually just "steps from the beach". The staff at the hotel are very friendly and showed the "aloha spirit" every chance they got.

Location is great, walking distince to shopping and food. Centrally located to both sides of the island. Also important, they are located before the Kapaa alternate road, which helps greatly in getting around the traffic jams.

WOW !!! What a facelift. Always loved the location and quaintness of this hotel but it was quite rundown. The new owner and management did a wonderful job in upgrading the rooms, the landscape and the staffing. For a pleasant vacation with the relaxing sound of the ocean waves right outside your room I highly recomment the NEW Hotel Corel Reef Resort. Check out their website!

My husband and I stayed at this location in Kapaa because of its close proximity to both ends of the island - even a travel agent said we were staying in a good location. We're an active (adventure-racing/triathlon/marathon- type) professional couple who found the facility quite charming. The hotel staff was friendly (our rate was $90/night), exuded the aloha spirit, and certainly pointed out points of interest on the island. For beachfront property, not to mention a path to run on and a beach to surf/snorkel on right outside your private lanai, you really do get rustic accomodations appropriate for the amount of money you spend on the room. It's close to great local restaurants with excellent food as well as a supermarket. If you are looking for a simple, basic location for a base camp prior to executing the Kalaulau Trail (or returning from) or marathon snorkeling/diving throughout the island, this place is perfect for you and your significant other. If you need to be pampered with fluffy pillows and pretty much not venture out into what Kauai has to offer, then definitely the $200+ rooms at other locations are for you. It's no-frills accomodation because Kauai has so much to offer OUTSIDE. We highly recommend the Coral Reef Hotel for those who truly go to Kauai to experience its natural beauty!

Stayed here last month (2/05) for one night. It's one of the only coconut coast hotels. I just took the non-ocean view room for $89/night, and it was fine. The grounds are beautiful & directly on the sea. It had AC, something most top Kauai resorts don't even have, which mostly drowned out the street noise. I found the place rather quaint - like pre-tourism quaint (there's not much of this left on Kauai).

OK - so the bed was a bit soft and the room small, but you're in paradise - get out of room and into the ocean! You get what you pay for: as my dad would say, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

If you've never been to Kauai (especially you honeymooners), you won't be happy staying here. I stayed here as Lonely Planet guide recommended it. We simply needed to stay somewhere for one night before checking into our timeshare in Princeville. There are several places to eat just south down the street.
