Recently stayed for a week in suite K14 i think it was which was the last building furthest from reception, and it was very quiet and private, with a view over the field to the pacific (ask for a room on 2nd floor and facing the ocean - scenic view i guess as that is what we booked, or you may end up facing the road, and it is a busy road). As usual i am not giving this place 5 stars for 5 star service, im giving it because it is a brilliant place to base yourself when on island for the independent sort out there. The room was one of the deluxe rooms (we had not booked one I do not think, so happy days as the other room are tropical colours, i live in the caribbean, i don't need more of that) which really does make the place feel like a typical one bedroom condo I could easily live in full time, with neutral colours, well stocked kitchen for the two of us, full fridge/freezer, decent sized bedroom and bathroom, good sized living room with very comfortable couch for crashing out on and a decent sized balcony. OK i think it is a wooden building and maybe a few years old now (the facia is wooden at least) and with it being Hawaii tropical it does quickly show weathering, and some little touches were already showing some age (strip light over the kitchen sink was not working and quite rusty, wood on balcony showing the weather - to be expected)...but i paid about US160 a night. For a very nice, very quiet, one bedroom condo. This is outstanding value. Staff were very pleasant as well. Also noted three pools and a few bbqs (didnt use them, but had a peek). I said I would stay at the hotel i reviewed back in January if i was on Kauai'i again....but I'm very pleased i tried this place instead, this is now where I will stay if I am back. I suspect some people may live there permanently or at least long term - I am quite jealous!
Any other cons? The sign saying to look for oncoming traffic from building K blocks the view of the road. Yup, that is how hard pressed i am to find real cons. Maybe also the window based AC unit for those hot days when it is needed or to cool the room in the evening (hawaii nights ac is not needed) - it is channeled mostly into the bedroom in K14 using a 'tunnel' in the shelf next to the sofa that sits in front of 3/4 of the ac unit so struggled to cool the sitting room while chilling the bedroom, might be useful to be able to change the airflow between the bedroom, living room or both equally rather than mostly to the bedroom (since it really isn't needed at night, but early evening in the sitting room after a sunny day it can be). Very minor point though as we hardly used the AC (and we love AC!). Oh and the burner tents in the bbq near building K were pretty much rusted away (quick replacement tents needed, maintenance may have already been on it, bbq otherwise was in great shape). Other than that the owners and staff are clearly putting a bit of effort into this place.
Should also note there is an expedia (i think) local expert who can book your tours at reception (very useful), and one of the top rated restaurants is just over the road with decent prices (although the barman there is a miserable so and so, be warned). Local supermarket is 5 mins walk along the main road (also an indian restaurant in that plaza - Shivaliks - is top notch if you love curry like I do), and a McDs if you really must, plus a Safeway in the plaza just after this and quite a few restaurants from local to italian around safeway and just beyond into Kapaa. In other words the hotel has a great location, central for getting anywhere. Big winner in my book.
Ask for top floor, facing the field/ocean. We were in building K - half the rooms face the road, hal...

I will take a five star rating on staff, value, accommodations, and location anytime. WOW! Thank you for such a thorough review of Plantation Hale. We are getting great comments on our new Deluxe Suites. I went for a Starbucks this morning and you are right, the plants are blocking the oncoming traffic posting at the exit to K Building. We will have that corrected. I must say I am so thrilled you enjoyed your suite, and appreciated the character of our plantation style setting. We look forward to your return and so very much appreciate your business. Aloha.
