“Best Experience on Kauai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2011

If you are an adventurer at heart, then this tour is for you. Our guide Bobby was knowledgeable about the area, plants, the river. The tour includes an approximately 2 mile kayak up the Wailua river, then a one mile hike to a beautiful waterfall, where we had lunch (which they provide), swam and took in the beauty of Kauai. Highly recommended.

“A peaceful kayak & trek up the Wailu River and to the Wailu Falls Kauai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

Rainbow Kayak Tours operate out of Kapaa ( Kauai Island) and the 4-5 hour Kayak & trek up the Wailua River to the Falls was professionally guided by Chris Freeman. A maximum number of 6 double kayaks meant an intimate group was kept well informed by Chris on the local history of the flora and fauna.
Lunch provided at the falls and the 4-5 hour trip not rushed.
Thoroughly recommended for those who want to visit the falls in a small group.
Bring walking shoes and a camera.

Aloha MichaelT,
Chris is the man!!! He is one of the best/ most professional guides on Kaua'i and were stoked to have him as part of our ohana(family). We have been working together daily since 2006. We met guiding remote sea kayak trips on the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. All my wildest ocean kayaking experiences have been with him. He has a profound understanding of water sports and reads sensitive weather reports well. He is smart, articulated, and extremely interesting to engage in conversation. Also, what a sweet set of chops! Mahalo for the review.

“Experience the lush beauty & serenity of Kauai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2011

This is one of the most special trips on Kauai. The Wailua River Valley is rich in culture and history and to experience it from a kayak is unforgettable.
I currently live on island and there are a lot of choices of activities and companies who provide service. Rainbow Kayak Tours has the most professional staff, gear, service and they are punctual!
Aaron is an amazing guide and he offers a lot of information throughout the tour. He's energetic, entertaining and takes his work seriously. There seems to be a great team morale with this company, which is a nice dynamic.
Make sure to pack shoes for the hike, it gets muddy and a bit slippery! Extra mosquito repellent is key. A towel and swimsuit for the water fall at the end of the hike....
A great adventure for any body type too!!!!

Aloha Angela,
We always love to hear from kama'aina. Mahalo, also for recognizing some of our teams strengths. We do feel there is a great dynamic at rainbow. We're stoked. As for the mosquitoes, they only bother the sweet ones. Most days the majority of us never see insects. Great tip on the footwear. The trail can be bone dry one day and ankle deep mud the next, so its always nice to have solid footwear. We suggest a sport shoe (keen, teva, chaco, vibram, merrel) or running shoes you don't mind getting wet. We do sell throw away water shoes for 15 dollars at the office, but it always good to have the support of quality footwear. Getting wet and muddy is part of the adventure. Everyday in the Wailua valley provides a different condition. This dynamic, raw beauty is of the many reason the valley is special. Look forward to having you as a repeat offender!!!

“Pretty good time.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2011 via mobile

I feel the Rainbow website is a little misleading: if we passed "numerous hallowed shrines" I didn't see them and they were certainly not pointed out. Also, when they say you will "view" an "ancient villiage," that means you will pass by quickly on your kayak a reconstruction of what an ancient village may have looked like (before the parking lot was installed). My experience might have been guide-specific. I just didn't feel I gained much more than I would have just going it alone and it isn't cheap. And some of the other tour groups provided walking sticks which looked really helpful when trudging through the mud.

Aloha Shenendahowa,

Mahalo for your feedback. Sometimes it is difficult to uphold the highest level of professionalism without constructive criticisms. Although I assure you our team strives daily to be the best Wailua outfitter. We rarely get negative comments towards our business. After further review of our website we agree the sentence which you mentioned is misleading. The heiaus we paddle past are not visible and the wording is a bit misleading. Also the overgrowth of Hau (sea hibiscus) in past few years does not allow a view of the more interesting areas of Kamokila village. These changes are already in motion and will be implemented asap to our web designer. With that said, the Wailua river valley from the mouth to Uluwehe falls is filled with a variety of outstanding flora/fauna, history, culture, and rock structure left behind by Kaua’ian royalty. Our six guides carry collectively over thirty years of experience working on this river alone and we may be one of the only tour operations with no turnover in more than five years. All of our guides can even be found on the river when not working and have a genuine love for its history, culture, people and wildlife. No guest should leave our operation without feeling like ohana (family). Truly your safety is our number one concern, but a guide not relaying their knowledge and enthusiasm to you, as our guest, is unacceptable. The only way we can move forward to correct this issue would be for you to contact us privately and provide the name of your guide. As for a walking stick, it’s obvious that they are easy to provide. We do keep a stash of walking sticks handy in the jungle, but our guides only give them to guests they feel need the extra stability. Most of our guests are in great physical condition and the majority of injuries on the trail over the years have been due to walking sticks directly. We do our best to respond to all comments and it is unfortunate we have to send our sincere apologies today. We look forward to be given the opportunity to redeem ourselves and prove to you our operation exhibits flawlessly sound business practice. Even more importantly we hope to have another opportunity to show you a great experience on the garden isle. Your business is important to all of us here at Rainbow Kayak Tours. Please feel free to contact us at your convenience to schedule your family’s next trip up the Wailua river free of charge. Please go on kauaikayaktour.com and choose the guide of your choice. Our ohana is adamant on getting you back on the water. Mahalo for your time. A hui ho (until we meet again).

“Beautiful, adventurous, romantic, challenging tour.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2011 via mobile

Great guide took us on a fairly easy kayak tour on the river to a very cool and pretty hiking trail.

Destination --- amazing 150- foot waterfall and lagoon you can swim in. Post card material.
Good for families and couples. A bit challenging with all the kayaking 2 miles, and 1 mile hike on unsteady terrain but worth it. Feel healthy after. Safe. Worth the 4 hr tour.

Aloha,
Were glad you felt safe and enjoyed your trip into the interior. Safety is our number one concern, having fun is always a close second. We take guest from all walks of life. Honey mooners, families, couples, and work groups frequent our tour. Sharing the Wailua valley is what we do! I have taken folks from the ages of 5 to 85 when weather conditions and physical fitness warrant. Our trip can be done enjoyably by most, but we do give you our sleep good guaranteed. Four miles of kayaking and two miles of hiking will earn you your hot tub rights. For sure post card material at the waterfall! It seems quests use their family waterfall picture more commonly for Christmas cards. Mahalo for the review.
