Kayaking down the Wailua River and then hiking to The Secret FAlls was a perfect way to spend part of the day. Kayaking was easy and the hike was not difficult as long as you kept track of where you were walking. The scenery was beautiful; the waterfall chilling; the chickens watched and a cow who wandered too far was saved. What more could you ask for! This was my favorite planned activity during our stay.

“Paddle & Hike - great 1/2 day value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

We did the guided 4 mile paddle 1.5 mile hike trip. It was most excellent and I'd recommended it for active folks. River is spectacular and you are in the middle of this amazing valley (with amazing amazing history), surrounded by crazy big mountains. If we see the river from the road far far above, you'll get some perspective on what an awesome place you'll paddle into. So up the river. Then after a bit, you paddle single file through an inlet to a take out point to hike in to see the waterfall. So so fun.

Our guide was a young local guy that was very aware of the entire group. He shared alot of knowledge about the river and the vegetation. He made it a fun trip. His respect for Hawaiian history was awesome. I think having a guide was a big, big plus. Also - super patient guy that worked to all levels, made everyone feel good, and wasn't easily flapped.

The waterfall was big and fun. There were a couple other paddle groups there, but our tour stopped for 30-40 minutes so there was plenty of time to swim, take pictures, or get a little sun without a crowd.

If you want to get out and see some amazing things, you get over 1/2 a day of active fun. I thought this was one of the best values of our trip. Bring your own lunch, water, change of clothes, light jacket, sunscreen, and water/mud ready hiking sandals. They provide a nice, big dry bag for everything.

As one note - there's 4 miles of paddling in flat water/perhaps wind. There's a hilly (not hard though) 1.5 mile hike (round trip) over roots and mud. Parents - if you're kids aren't of the age where they can hold their own paddling or get tired from walking a distance...I sure would recommend bringing them back when they are older or find a sitter so you can go. You'll end up paddling a double kayak yourself and carrying them a bit during the hike.

Would definitely do this again. Definitely with a guide. Thought this group did a good job that was respectful of the history of the area, even though it's a touristy activity.

“Nice relaxing trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Did this trip with my 70 year old parents. The kayak paddle is easy and relaxing. The hike is easy for most people however it was not very muddy this trip. The hike was too much for Mom but she is 70 and has had both knees and hips replaced. If you have a choice of guides ask for Kimo. He is very entertaining. I assume Kimo gave us the straight scoop, how would we know since we are tourists. This would not be a trip if you are looking for a lot of excitement.

“Great Kayak trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

Fun trip to take! The guide we had was super. His name was Kimo (Jimmy). Great personality and yet very skilled, helpful and encouraging. A non swimmer fell out of her kayak and Kimo was there in seconds to help her back into the kayak. You need to wear footwear that you can get soaked and muddy. Bathing suits worked for us as we were in the water alot.

“Misleading”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I rented SUP(stand up paddle) boards. We watched a video to show how to stand up on the board, as it does take some coordination. The video tells you "don't worry about the paddle if you fall, they float". However what they don't tell you is that "those are the old style paddles. These new paddles will sink" and as a result a $150.00 charge was added to our bill for the lost paddle. My husband and I were surprised for that we were not told ahead of time that the paddles sink. We did manage to have the fee cut in half because we made a stink about the fact that we were not informed about the sinking paddles.

We did have fun going down the river, that wind was pushing us all the way. However, we had to fight the wind all the way back 2 KM to the shop. So this will test your skill and muscles... All of them.
