“Pleasant stay at the Sands”

We were pleasantly surprised with our accommodations at the Kapaa Sands. I was a little leery of staying at a condo building instead of a hotel but we gave it a try any way. It was just the two of us and we chose a small unit with a Murphy bed. The room was clean, had decent furniture, and the bed was comfortable. We really enjoyed having our own kitchen for nice light breakfasts and the ability to go shopping and pack picnic lunches. Over all, the property was nice and quiet. It felt like we had lived there all along and we would stay again any time we are on the island. Also, it was refreshing to have a second story ocean view for such a reasonable price.

“Loved staying here”

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon. We stayed on the 2nd floor of building #5. There were fragrant hawaiian leis and flowers in our room upon arrival. I don't know if they do that for everyone or just for us honeymooners. It did have a locked, connecting door with the room next door, but we never heard them. We had maid service, a murphy bed, full kitchen with appliances, silverware, plates, etc., with awesome kona coffee for hanging out on our private patio watching the sun come up and seeing the sea turtles just off shore every day! There is a very small beach, mostly rocks. You can't swim due to the current. But while I was standing on the rocks, it did push a family of sea turtles around my feet. I stood there in amazement. DO NOT TOUCH SEA TURTLES! We were told by locals that it is up to $10,000 fine if you touch/handle them.
There is a local Safeway supermarket not far from the condos and we even purchased local seafood to cook to save $$ going out to eat. To get everywhere is easy and the local restaurant across the street for breakfast was good.
We would stay here again. It's not five star accomodations, but to, "get away from it all," is just perfect for us.

This place gets rave reviews on the forum, so maybe my expectations were too high. I'm usually ok with budget accomodations.

We stayed in Unit 21, the 2 bedroom, 2 bath. So my comments are based on our experience in this unit.

This resort is in a busy, high traffic area, you will definitely hear road noise. The beach is not swimable and very small. There is no A/C only ceiling fans, so you'll have to leave windows/doors open at night for a breeze, therefore you'll hear all the early morning traffic and garbage trucks.

Our unit happened to be for sale. We were disturbed by the real estate agent who was late with her clients for a visit. She said she'd come between 1-2 pm but showed up at 5 pm.

There were many, many small black ants in the kitchen, a live cockroach in the cupboard and a huge dead cockroach in the kitchen window screen.

The main floor ceiling leaked from the upstairs bathroom and dripped onto the dining table....the leak in the ceiling had previously been "fixed" with duct tape. Lovely! The management office said there was nothing they could do, it was the owner's responsibility to fix it.

During our stay, the pool water turned green from algae, so they had to pump it out. They pumped all the water out into the parking lot so we had to wade though the pool water to get to our car.

Enough said.....the positives??.......Very cute resident cat who became our little buddy. It's a good location for day-tripping. The beach is small but pretty and used by locals who are friendly.

My experience might have been better in a different unit, but I don't think I'd stay there again.

Five of us stayed in two units at the Kapaa Sands for three nights, November 15 to 18. One of the units (#1) was right on the ocean, the other (#23) just behind, in the garden, but with a fine ocean view (the buildings are constructed so that the front units do not block the ones behind them).

The second unit was more updated than the first, but both were lovely, had all the amenities. These units have two bedrooms, but in truth, the second bedroom is very small, so if you are more than 3 people in one unit, you might find it tight.

Otherwise, the resort was great - very quiet, a great location, minutes from the airport, good restaurants, excellent beaches. There is a pool with propane BBQ units for the use of guests. The beach right in front of the resort is lovely to look at but not to swim. If you can make your way over a bit of rock and driftwood, there is a sheltered cove just fine for swimming a short distance away.

Overall this place was great - quite, clean, very well kept, with great service from very nice people in the office.

Very nice and cozy condos in a good location. Stayed in unit #10, a beachfront efficiency on the ground floor with a murphy bed.

Pros: The location is nice and central for access to the entire island of Kauai. Price is competitive with other condos in the area. Unit 10 was well furnished with a full set of kitchenwares (pots/pans/dishes/utensils/cooking tools etc) as well as a few very nice extras, like chip clips, beach chairs, rain umbrellas, and Hawaiian music CD's/movie DVD's to get in the Kauai mood. The property is small and has a cozy family feel to it, unlike even some of the other condos on Papaloa Rd. It was also very quiet, not a lot of kids around while we were there, thank goodness. Also the bird symphony is not as bad as Lae Nani--at Kapaa Sands we weren't woken up in the morning by birds. Our building was so close to the water that we'd fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of waves crashing on the shore.

Cons: The beach fronting the property is not very swimmable. Front office hours are limited, generally business hours, although a phone number is provided for emergencies. Beach towels are not provided--only pool towels and you apparently have to hunt down the maid to get new ones. There is an honor-system washer/drier on site so you could bring your own beach towels if needed. Lastly we had some struggles with the shower head which seemed to have a mind of its own temperature-wise, and never really wanted to stick with any one temperature.

In short we would stay here again. For the two of us it was a good amount of space in a good location.
