Just returned from a 7 night stay at the KCR. The resort is made up by 3 parallel wings that are perpendicular to the ocean. We were in a one bedroom garden view on the 2nd floor of the 3rd building. Had great ocean views on the lanai and had breakfast with my little toddler every morning. The pigeons are very brave and get to know your schedule after a couple days and start waiting for you.
Rooms-Great room and lots of space. The rooms seem to be recently renovated, 2 lcd televisions, newer appliances and all the cooking utensils you may need. AC worked great and a nice ceiling fan added in the Master. Great to have double vanities in the large bathroom as well as a washer/dryer that we used a couple times. Our boy used a very clean pack and play that the hotel provided for his bed. It seemed that we had maid service pretty much every day and changed towels upon request. The staff was very friendly throughout.
Outlets-Had one dinner at the Hukilau with the family. It was really great food and ambience. Suggest the Ahi Nachos and Filet. We did a Costco run upon arrival and had a bottle of wine that we bought as the corkage fee was a reasonable 10.00! The Pool Bar churns out a great Mai Tai, but is pretty low key.
Activities (on site)-The pool was moderate in size and never got crowed. Lounge chairs are easy to find and have areas around the pool and lawn area in front of beach. What makes it so family friendly is the toddler pool where my 2 year old was able to walk around and become comfy with the water. A sand box with tons of beach toys is there for the playing.
The gym was small and well used in the morning. There is a path along the beach that you can use to walk or run for a good distance (dirt trail in some sections)
Off Site Dining-Great breakfast at Kountry Kitchen and super friendly host. Good reviews from our party on the Mac nut pancakes and Eggs Benedict.
Kintaro for Teppan and Sushi was awesome. Hanalei Roll, Cajun Seared Ahi Roll, and the Filet Teppan got top marks. Very popular and can get crowded, make a reservation it was one of the best meals we had on the island.
The Beach House (Poipu), great setting and the food to match. Sunset here is spectacular. Popular surf break so you can watch the best locals ride as you dine on great seafood. The Truffle crusted catch of the day is great...had the Ono the day I was there. Very romantic, yet service was great for our large pary including a couple teens and toddlers.
Conclusion-
The Kauai Coast Resort gets big ups for its location. You can easily make it your base to get to Poipu or Princville/Hanalei area. Great family location where you can stock up on your in room meals at the Costco or the nearby Safeway and Foodland. Great when you have a kid to be able to prepare meals in the room. We were never asked about the timeshare presentation, but there were a ton of people going through it every day. They tend to walk by the pool during the tour, so that was a touch bothersome, but not too bad.
KCR is not the posh resort feel of Poipu or Princeville, but if you like to walk to a quick bite and feel a little more of the local flavor, Kauai Coast Resort in Kapaa is the ticket.
