“Lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013

We stayed here for 5 nights in a 1 bdrm garden view condo on the second floor. We had a gorgeous view over the gardens and ocean. The condo was clean, quiet and nicely furnished with laundry facilities also contained in the condo. The bed and sofa bed were comfortable. The staff were all welcoming although you probably will be asked if you wish to attend a timeshare presentation to receive a $100 dinner voucher. We were asked on check in and again the following day which I politely but firmly declined as I was not interested. There are shops and restaurant options nearby. The beach is not suitable for swimming so we went to Popui to snorkel in the bay which was gorgeous. For a wonderful lunch, go to Brennekes on the beach. Great ocean view, food and lovely service. We hired snorkel gear from the shop there also. The restaurant at the resort is also terrific but you will need to book as it is always busy.
A warning about the bath/shower - it is very slippy and I found out the hard way by taking a nasty tumble! Use the non slip mat provided.
Overall great value for money and highly recommended

Room Tip: A top floor would be quieter as we had noise from the floor above. You will see the ocean from any l...

We are SVC owners and - until this year - felt that this was SVC's "Crown Jewel". KCR is located behind the Coconut Marketplace just south of Kapaa, Kauai, Hawai'i. The grounds are kept manicured in every way - a joy to behold. The pool & spa are OK but certainly not up to most resort standards. The pool could definitely use a better filter as the water was a little 'murky'. The beachfront is beautiful, especially for sunrises. It is not a swimming beach - Poipu to the south, Nawilwili Bay (at the Marriott in Lihue) and Hanalei Bay up north are probably the best beaches. KCR's beach is pretty rocky and not what most people would consider for swimming. The room they show to prospective time-share buyers is extraordinary... literally! The rooms that are actually 'rented' out are pretty tired - the 'pergo' type flooring is lifting at the edges and the whole place needs a facelift. I understand it was a boutique type hotel back in the 1960s and was eventually purchased by Shell. This brings us to my problem with this year's visit.
Kauai's electric rate is now about $0.50/kwh. (By comparison, where I live in the Pacific Northwest, the electric rate is about $0.07/kwh.) This resort consists primarily of one 'main' building in the front for registration and the restaurant (Hukilau Lanai - EXCELLENT!). All of the accomodations are in three, three-story buildings positioned perpindicular to the beach. This property's "air conditioning" depends upon a 'central chilling plant' I believe to be within or beneath the 'main' building. September is a particularly uncomfortable month with the combined heat & humidity. The third floor, beachfront rooms do NOT cool down until about 4AM. We had to sleep on TOP of our bedding with the overhead fans blasting down on us as well as a pedestal fan. During the day and well into the night, the room was QUITE uncomfortable. I mentioned the utility rates above as they may have some "influence" on just how management is operating this old 'chiller' based A/C system.
The management and staff at KCR are kind and as helpful as they can be but the facility itself disappoints because of the poor A/C. They did all they could for us - literally. SVC/Wyndham needs to seriously refurbish the rooms and upgrade or replace the now inadequate A/C system(s). But for the tired decor and decrepit air handling/condition systems, this property would go back to being our absolute favorite place to go. As for now, we won't be back until the rooms are refurbished and the A/C is upgraded or replaced.

Room Tip: If I were to go now, I would insist on second floor 'ocean view' near the main building. Av...

We only stayed one night and the room was so nice we wished we had more. Huge one bedroom, garden view. Fast check in. Keys wouldn't work so security let us in and got us new keys. Full kitchen, washer/dryer, large bathroom with double sinks, nice bedroom with comfy mattress on 4 poster bed, flat screen tv, ample closet space, living area large and a balcony on second floor. Will go back and stay longer. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Nice walking path on the ocean. Location is just behind the coconut marketplace and there was no highway noise, nice and quiet, very clean. Central island location.

One bedroom garden view. Clean, clean, clean. King size bed. Large sitting area with balcony and flat screen TVs. Kitchen updated, clean. Bathroom huge. Two sinks. Separate room for toilet and shower/tub. Nice location and price. Stayed in Maui week before for roughly same price and room was outdated, stained carpets, dusty. Felt totally at home at the Beachboy. Unpacked and nested. Since much of the things to do in Kauai are during the day, was nice to come back to the hotel to do laundry, watch a movie (Gone With the Wind) eat some popcorn and recoop from the aches and pains of hiking, snorkeling and exploring the island all day.

The hotel itself is very nice and clean. If you are older and looking to relax, this could be the perfect hotel for you.

I would recommend younger travelers or couples to look elsewhere. The good thing is that you are only a quick drive to anywhere you'd like to visit on Kauai!

However, there were a bit too many cons:
- we were one night without AC. This is manageable but the hotel did not provide any sort of credit for the inconvenience
- minimal beaches
- the location of the hotel was always surrounded by clouds and rain due to the mountains. This of course is beyond the hotels doing, but we went to kauai for sunshine, and not clouds and rain. Would recommend staying on the other side of the island. The side where the hotel is on is referred to as the rainy side.
- we left the 'do not disturb' sign on our door as we prefer to not have a maid service daily. Yet when we came back to our hotel room we found our room had been serviced.
- after checkout, the hotel allows you to use their facilities and beaches. The down side - there is no hospitality room or private showers for people to use after spending the entire day at the beach, prior to boarding for your next flight. However we were told by the front desk that we could use the outdoor shower by the pool - keep in mind, the outdoor showers they were referring to were the showers people use to get sand off their feet...
- the concierge was unreliable. After spending time with locals from Kauai, we were told this was the season to absolutely NOT take any boat trips due to the current. However, the concierge highly recommended and talked up how we should take a boat to see the napali coast and the waves on that side of the island would be minimal. We would've preferred an honest opinion and possibly an alternative route to see the coast (I.e hiking).
- mixed vibe from the staff

My wife and daughter spent 8 nights a the Lauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy and this was a return stay.
The grounds, staff, and restaurant on site were fantastic and made the stay even more relaxing.
When it comes to find a spot to swim just walk along the beach area and down a little way you can find a nice spot to go in and swim and a little further you will find a spot for small children that they will also enjoy.
As a saying goes "Try it you will like it"

Room Tip: We had ocean front this time but we have also had other rooms before.

The rooms are nice with a full kitchen. Whenever we needed something or had an issue with the room, they were at our door in under 10 minutes. The pool is super fun especially with our 5 year old. They have a big pool with a waterfall, a toddler pool, and a hot tub. We're also right on the ocean and get the stunning sunrise into our room.
