“Great hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

Lots of switchbacks, but the view is excellent. Be aware that the very tip of the trail is dangerous.

“Great hike”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2011

Went with my girlfriend on a sunny day but had rained the day before. We started from the east trailhead which makes about a 2 mile hike to the top. The trail is steep with lots of switchbacks but is very well marked and easy to follow. There are some amazing views of the valley and ocean on the way up. A nice picinic table area awaits at the lower summit with a nice lookout over the valley. Another 1/3 of a mile or so will take you to the giant's chin/face . . .basically the summit where you can see 360 degrees and get some even better views. The hike to here involves some steeper areas and you have to be cautious because there are areas where a fall would certainly be fatal . . . so go slow and make sure you're ok with heights. But if you're sure on your feet, have good shoes and are careful the views are fantastic. The climb down is 2 miles all downhill which is a nice reward.

Great introductory hike just behind the town of Kapaa with a stunning view of the area from the top. Check out trail reviews prior to setting out.

“Good Hike!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2011

We hiked this trail early one morning. I am 58 years old and in fair shape. It was uphill all the way but not too steep. The trail is well defined. The views are very good all along the trail. There was only one spot that was a little bit of a challenge. Coming down was a breeze. If you are looking for a moderate hike on the island, this one is very good.

“Sleeping Giant is well worth the steep 2 mile walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2011

We walked the trail last week and it's a long haul because it's steep and hot, but well worth the effort. We're in our late 50's and early 60's and didn't have any problem. Our recommendation is go on a clear day when it's NOT raining. It could be very slippery in many areas if it rains, not to mention the mess with the red dirt. Follow the path and don't venture off because you think it might be a short cut. We did that and lost 1/2 hour and found ourselves going straight up a mountain side; and then we had to go back down... scary stuff.

There are mile markers every 1/2 mile so you know how far you are from reaching the top. There are picnic tables about 1/2 mile from the top where you can eat and rest. The last 1/2 mile requires a little more 'climbing' but as long as you're careful it's fine. Once you're at the top, be sure to walk to your left and there are 2 caves/holes in the mountain. The wind comes thru those caves and it feel like air conditioning. It's the reward you get for your walk up the mountain and it's awesome. You can crawl into the caves too. The views are spectactular.

The walk down is easy and doesn't take that long. Bring lots of water, sunscreen, and your camera.
