Owner description: Please be advised that the trail leading to Secret Falls has been greatly improved since November 16th, 2014. A board walk has been installed to span the ditches which have been very muddy for many months. Although the trail is often muddy and slippery, the overall hiking experience is substantially better. For those of you who hiked the Secret Falls trail earlier this year, all of the kayak companies thank you for your patience and understanding that the rain forest trail is through a wilderness which is subject to Mother Nature's whimsical behavior. Mahalo nui loa and a hui hou!

“Forrest is "da man"!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

Really enjoyed this trip. Fairly easy kayak ride up the Wailua river, then a short hike to a decent waterfall and pool. Overall the trip took about 4.5 hours. Easy to do even for families with kids. Our guide was Forrest, who really made the trip. He's a character, and has character too! Funny dude, who can notch it back and give you the real deal on what's up in Kauai. Clearly really enjoys his job, life and gives it all to his tour. Way to bring it Forrest!

“Kayak Wailua with Lisa!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Fun, informative, family-friendly experience....Kayak Wailua has it all! Our tour guide, Lisa, was perfect. She is an experienced guide full of fun facts and cultural history which she happily shared with our group. This is a great adventure for all ages as you kayak your way along the river, hike to the "secret" falls, and enjoy lunch when you reach the destination. The trip itself is fantastic, the cost is very reasonable, and our guide, Lisa, was attentive to everyone's needs...encouraging the little ones, challenging the teens, and creating a sense of adventure for the older ones in our group. She even took pictures of us with her own camera when my waterproof camera ran out of film, and e-mailed them to us so we could continue to enjoy our experience after it ended. Kayak Wailua is number one in customer satisfaction, with the best guides for the best outdoor experience you can have on Kauai. No need to look further when planning your outing....Kayak Wailua, and tour guide Lisa, are simply the best!

“Fun but could have been better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

I enjoyed the kayaking, hiking and the waterfall. And I enjoyed getting to know some of the other people on the trip. But the receptionist (her name is something like "Charona") that greeted us was very unpleasant. Actually, she didn't even greet us. She ignored us and was rude when we tried to talk to her. The guide, John, was pleasant enough, but he was not very friendly and definitely not very talkative. I understand guides are instructed to not be pushy, but getting him to talk about anything was like pulling teeth. It would have been much better with a different person greeting us and a more friendly guide.

Aloha Diane ~

Thank you for your comments about our family operated business. Unfortunately, brother Jon and sister Terada failed to meet your expectations. I can only guess that Terada was extremely busy with phone inquiries, reservations and parking cars at the time you checked in. The only real remedy for that is hiring a greeter which also means charging a higher rate per person. Terada is a very popular island born resident and guided her first unofficial tour at age 9. Her brother Jonathan specializes in Hawaiian culture and language. Typically he is criticized for being too verbose; I can see that he needs to find a happy medium. Thank you for your review; I hope you can forgive my kids for having a bad day.

“Beautiful scenery and great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Kayaking up the Wailua River was such a fun and great experience. Our guide was Kawika. He was a lot of fun and very informative. If you want to avoid the crowds, take the latest 1 pm tour. Our tour only had 3 kayaks, plus Kawika. By the time we hiked to the waterfalls, most of the other tours were leaving. When it gets hot on the river, just start a splashing oar war with Kawika, and you will quickly cool off.

We paid the additional $5 for the high back seats in the kayak. They were much more comfortable and helped my husband who frequently has back pain.

We recommend going to a local grocery store to buy some sandwich fixings, etc., so you can pack your lunch for this tour. Tour company provides lunch bag coolers. Don't forget to bring water! (You will have to carry your cooler with you on the hike to the waterfalls).

Remember: Be kind and patient with your kayak partner. You still have to spend the rest of your vacation with them! Beautiful scenery and experience not to be missed!

“Fantastic Experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

This was an extremely fun and beautiful experience! If you go, ask for the female tour guide Summer: she is laid back, sweet, informative, and overall the perfect guide! She gave very interesting information about the island and vegetation, and she even recommended other places to go on the island, which we took her advice on and loved! This kayak tour is great because you are in a group, but can go at your own pace on the return hike and kayak trip. You also will get a great deal of time to relax and have fun in the waterfall pool at the end of the hike. The kayak ride is about 45mins-1hr there, then there is a mile walk to the waterfall. The kayak ride on the river is peaceful with gorgeous views and hike is beautiful, as you travel through a variety of terrains. I would highly recommend this tour, this company, and Summer as a guide!
