For $5 a night the price cannot be beat, however this is a local hobo beach hangout. The locals were drinking until dawn and the place was ROACH infested. The bathrooms were camping bathrooms, only open showers on the beach. It was great though because the beach is right there and the sunset was awesome.. but truly a local hangout with homeless living in the park. Expect the ranger to be there bright and early to check your permit... attached it to the tent!
This beach is used mostly by locals and was pretty busy. The water was calm so it is good for swimming, but it was a little too crowded for my taste. We got a pizza at Brick Oven in Kaleheo and took it to the beach to eat. (The pizza by the way was overpriced and overrated).
We have visited Kauai several times and love it! Salt Pond is a lovely, user friendly beach. Snorkeling is OK, very good for beginners especially. Restrooms, pavilions, and plenty of parking. It is a mostly protected half circle beach, great for just relaxing, enjoying the sound and smell of the ocean. Family friendly too!
On December 7th (pearl harbor day) I was married at sunset on the beach at "Salt Pond Beach Park". After checking EVERY beach area/park on the island it was the perfect location to have a beautiful Beach front wedding.
Salt Pond Park is located on the West side of Kauai, the side of the island with the BEST sunsets and also the hottest side. The park is located right on the beach with covered shelters, picnic tables,BBQ pits, restrooms with flush toilets and a GREAT swimming beach. Its definetly a place that the locals like to hang out at. On one side of the park there are acctual commercial "salt ponds" used to harvest the pink sea salt that the islands are famous for. If you are looking for a place to spend the day swimming/picnicing, that isnt full of tourists and kind of out of the way, Salt Pond Beach Park is the place for you.
