I have never reviewed a place we have gone, though I love TripAdvisor and it was actually a TripAdvisor peep who recommended the HCR to us. We went for our honeymoon in July, and it was the most incredible experience of our lives! Getting there was a Trip - we went at night which I would not suggest as it was very dark, wild, and hard to see where we were going. If we hadn't had Google maps we would never have gotten there! This place really feels like it's at the end of the earth, and that's just what we loved. It was so peaceful, wild, and relaxing. We fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing.

Pros:
-incredible views - we ate breakfast every day on our balcony and watched the wonderful waves and beautiful mountains
-big space for a good price - still pricey because all of Hawaii is but it was a very large suite for us with a nice living area
-stunningly gorgeous and great for lovely walks on the beach
-great access to outdoor activities - fun beaches, good snorkeling, hikes, and adventures are all very close
-so quiet and peaceful - its like a break from the whole world which is incredible! I think this was truly the highlight, just really getting away from the world to a place that feels so untouched by people.

Cons:
-No A/C - you don't really need it at night to sleep because the winds are lovely but we found ourselves waking up quite early because it became too warm
-Our bed was not the best, and I'd wager that most of the rooms have older beds which don't provide great support
-You are in a very wild location so we had a few bugs
-It is not a fancy hotel or full service kind of place. The maid doesn't come every day, the pool is quite small, and the rooms are a little dated. They don't have room service or anything, it's really more like renting a condo.

Tips: I would not stay on oceanfront, we stayed at one place on the 2nd floor farther back but with ocean views and then also at oceanfront and even though oceanfront is oceanfront, it is so close to the water that the balcony was wet and cold so you really can't enjoy sitting out there a lot like we did when we were further back.
-Also don't get there at night.

We would go back in a heartbeat, this place was the best! We wish we could go more often but it's too hard to get to from NYC! We would buy a place here if we could, this was an incredible, breath-taking experience, Kauai is just the best place on earth! Seriously my husband tried to figure out how we could move here!

Room tip: Oceanfront is only preferable if you don't want to use the balcony

Our ocean condo had an unobstructed view and was just steps away from the beach. We could see the ocean from all our windows and fell asleep to the waves. The condo itself was well-equipped, not the fanciest, but good enough. Steve, the conrcierge, was very helpful with suggestions and he helped book several excursions. He went above-and-beyond when we left a camera battery charger behind as we moved to the 2nd part of our vacation to Poipu. Cheryl kindly met us halfway in Kapa'a with the battery. The shuttle van was convenient in the evening. The town of Hanalei had great restaurants and cute shops. We had a nice dinner at Tahiti Nui, could not get into Hanalei Gourmet on fish taco night, had delicious breakfast at Hanalei Coffee Roasters and enjoyed shave ice. With the full kitchen at the condo, we also ate breakfast in (i.e., on the beach outside our condo) and even had one dinner in (i.e., roast chicken and sides from Foodland). The North Shore is a less commercialized and more tropical environment. All in all, a fabulous vacation spot. We hope to return soon.

Room tip: J1 was an amazing unit.

Hanalei Colony Resort is actually a condo community that rents the condos to visitors at a daily rate when not being used by the owners. All condos are laid out and decorated in the same way, so there is uniformity among the units. Housekeeping service is optional, but is apparently provided on request at additional expense. The restaurant was closed when we were there and under repair after a fire, so we didn't have the opportunity to see what the restaurant was like. There is a pool with a nice sitting area, and each unit has either a small balcony or a small patio with differing water views. The units were very comfortable, and it seems each unit has 2 full bathrooms, a small kitchenette, and a sitting/dining area. Our unit had 2 twin day beds and a separate bedroom with a king bed. I gather all units are outfitted this same way. The grounds are beautiful, well maintained, and provide easy access to the beautiful beach that borders the resort.

Our first time in Kauai. We spent the first 4 days in Poipu and stayed at the lovely Koa Kea resort. However, we spent a full week at HCR. We couldn't have been more pleased with our unit--lovely view of the ocean. It's not fancy--but it was clean. The pool is small, but the grounds are well kept. The employees were very helpful. We loved the location. Close to the town of Hanalei. Enjoyed the variety of beaches and hiking close by. Definitely would like to return!

With our family of 4 including two kids age 8 and 11 we were on HCR for about a week. We absolutely loved this place. The condo was older but still great and had some ingenious room partitioning with retractable walls. We loved the serenity, the beaches (swimming and snorkeling were good right around the corner). We all loved it here, although their restaurant just burned down...
The only thing I wish they would improve the spotty WiFi.
We really want to come back.
