“No Noisy Chickens”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Kauai is a special place. The North end of the island is much different than the south end where the large resorts are located.

The North end is very laid back on the island that is the most laid back of all of Hawaii. Make sure you check out the Farmers Market. Very colorful and local produce can be purchased. The Farmers Market also has many vendors that are selling crafts for less than the local gift shops.

The Hanalei Colony Resort is off by itself on the North end of Kauai. It is an older property set up in a condo arrangement. The kitchen allows preparation of some meals which saves on the travel budget. There is a restaurant associated with the property, but it was expensive.

Out stay at the Hanalei Colony Resort was very relaxing. Nothing fancy, but it delivered good value for the money. This is not a place where you would stay for just one night. It is a property where you would stay for several days soaking in the local color and great weather. We had a much different experience at Hanalei Colony than we experienced at a Kauai resort on the south end of the island.

Kauai is famous for wild chickens wondering all over the island. The chickens are colorful, but can be very irritating when they start crowing at 4AM. We did not experience that problem at Hanalei Colony, because there is a population of “working cats” on the property that keep the chickens away. After your first trip to Kauai you will understand the chicken problem more clearly.

On our first vacation together, pre-marriage, my beloved and I stayed in Princeville; thirty years later, we decided to revisit the North Shore of Kaua'i and picked this place. It is remote, compared to Poipu or Kapa'a, and some of the food establishments are very, very popular. I'll review a few outside of this one.

The staff was gracious and the rooms were very spacious. We had some qualms about a lack of air conditioning, but with louvers and plentiful ceiling fans, the temps were not a problem. The bed was very comfortable, but the pillows were a bit lumpy/old. Still, we slept well!

The grounds are well-maintained, but not with the fanatic leaf-blowing, tweezer-mentality of some properties. You won't get awoken at 7am, "rest" assured.

Beaches: the local one isn't for swimming, but it's pretty. Luckily, Haen'a and Tunnels are a short drive and there is superb snorkeling at both. Ke'e was high surf in Late April, and so crowded that we didn't go there - just bypassed it on a drive. We'd hiked the Kalalau Trail multiple times, and we weren't in the mood for a fifth this trip, though it is very worth the effort if you haven't accomplished it previously.

The local restaurant is quite good, perhaps the only one on Kaua'i that has a Mediterranean menu. Their Ultimate Mai Tai is really, really good. Don't forget that you get a drink free - on Thursdays - as a guest. We also had two GREAT massages at their spa. Did I say GREAT? Go there. The Gift Shop has some very nice jewelry and fossils - we got a pair of split Ammonites for a very nice price - though I had my eyes on Maori jewelry, we decided that I had a sufficient 'gallery'..

Room Tip: Don't spend too much time in your room - you are in Kaua'i not to be in a room! All are fin...

Just got back from 7 glorious days. My daughters and I stayed at the Hanalei Colony Resort. Everyone was most helpful and accommodating. My clumsy self broke my toe within 5 minutes of checking in. The Resort comped me a $25 gift certificate for use at the restaurant on site. It wasn't necessary, but it was so thoughtful. Steven, the concierge, was the best. He set up activities and made sure that everything came off without a hitch. After arriving home, I discovered that I had left an earring in the room. I contacted the resort, and they found it and sent it to me. I am in love with Hawaii and everyone at HCR.

Room Tip: We popped for the beach side room and it was well worth it.

This was our first stay at the resort and it will not be our last! This was an amazing resort for our family of four (3 yr old son / 9 yr old daughter). Plenty of beautiful trees, plants, lizards on the grounds and of course the beaches that are literally a stones throw away. Walking with our little ones onto the beach at 6 am was just breath taking...literally! The generosity and the love we felt from all the staff, including the landscapers and electricians was amazing! Really made our family feel at home and especially welcome! The location was AMAZING....away from the busy town life and tourists...just what our family wanted.

We stayed in H1 - ground level room with a little balcony that was just perfect for early morning tea and late afternoon cocktails before hitting up the pool and bbq! Great to air dry your swimsuits too!

Excellent to do laundry too before heading home- bring quarters to do yours too! $1.25 to wash and $1.00 to dry....pretty reasonable!

Mini fridge at the pool and spa was great too....sunbathe, swim, bbq and enjoy your cocktail, cold! :) Not to mention the HUGE KOI fish in the pond...we spent hours staring at them and Ka....such a cool setup! Thanks for the community pool/kiddie toys too....kept our little guy busy for a great amount of time!

Definitely grocery shop before heading into the resort- we passed up on the Costco trip and hit up Safeway and Foodland- had what we needed for the bulk and we added our favorite treats from Hanalei (town just about 15 minutes drive from the resort) ei: health/organic/fresh fruit/alcohol.

The Wainiha General Store -"Last Chance" had great popsicles too...last little stop/shop/sundries/alcohol/milk about 10 minutes from the resort too.

Bar onsite at the resort had great bartenders...wealth of knowledge and easy to talk too...killer gyros for that lunch you didn't feel like cooking! :)

This was a surprise trip that I planned for my husband and two children and they were very pleasantly surprised! We can not wait to come back...thank you so very much for the awesome time and so excited to share this fabulous secret....:)

Room Tip: I would choose a ground level- the balcony and table chairs were great- easy to walk right up three...

A long drive (over one hour) from Lihu'e and over several one way bridges brings you close to the ocean for this remote island resort. Our flight was 5 hours delayed (see my review on Go Airlines) thus we came in at midnight and you just keep going on Hwy 560 in the dark until you see the sign. Coming in late was no problem as the office has a lock box which had our room key and a map. It is a walk and up the stairs for second floor rooms so carrying your own luggage is a must. Also, be sure and stop at the Safeway on your way out of Lihu'e. Open 24 hours with all the selection that you get on the mainland if a bit pricier. We even found our favorite champagne. The rooms are not new (built in the 70's) and there was a mildew smell when you first walked in, but the location was absolutely perfect with views and sounds of the ocean. The beach, just a few steps away, went on and on. Kitchen had all the utensils needed and grills outside were perfect. Four days latter we left wanting to spend a few more days for hiking and sunning. No TV's or radios but Wi-fi throughout so you could connect to the outside world. Grounds are very well maintained though the doors of the units are old hollow core and anything with metal (screen doors) are corroded due to the high salt concentration in the air. Loved the sliding doors that split in the middle so you could open it up to bring in the breeze off the patio. Lovely location for couples or families who want to spend time together.

We spent four nights here recently. The location on the north shore is spectacular, and we liked the relative isolation and simplicity of the place. It's a place for quiet walks on an isolated beach, not to see and be seen. Proximity to Tunnels and Ke'e beaches is great, as well as the Kalalau trail.

Stock up on groceries before you arrive (there's a grocer in Hanalei that isn't terribly expensive, but I'm sure Lihu'e has better deals). The resort has gas and charcoal grilling available, which is a nice way to stay outside a little longer.

The rooms are large but quite simple. I think the price is a little steep, but it sure is nice to hear the waves from your room.

we spent for the second time a week in this resort, and it is just amazing!
nice, well equipped units, open to the Pacific, it feels at night as if you were sleeping on the beach.
close to the Beach from where youcan walk approx. 5 KM to mmet the end of it, where the cliffs fall into the Pacific. If you have seen The Island, or Jurassic Park, these movies were featured on Kauai, to give you an idea of the landscape.

Room Tip: the Ocean Front rooms are not the cheapest ones, but well... they are ocean FRONT!
