My family (two adults, two boys 13 and 10) spent the final two days of a week-long trip to the Big Island at the Hilton Waikoloa. It offered a sanitized, simulated Hawaii experience, much less rich than experiencing the reality of the rain forest (1 -2 hours away) or the truly spectacular snorkeling 5 feet offshore, at Kahalu'u Beach Park, just south of Kailua-Kona. My boys really liked the huge free-form swimming pool, waterfalls, water slide, jacuzzi, monorail, and lagoon, but I felt imprisoned in a fake world where everything was available for three times what it was worth.
