“Don't waste your money.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2010

The setting was bad. Should have been on the beach. Didn't have the feel of a party or a feast. No pig in pit. Performers didn't react with crowd. Acts were redundant. Same act different costumes. The food was just plain awful. Fish was old, pork was dry, Too much goop in the beef. Potato salad wasn't potato salad. You get the idea.

“Not bad at all”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2009

Reading mixed reviews i decided to go to the Luau without knowing what to expect.
When you first arrive they have a background set up for a photo, which they sell you at the end of the show very expensive! I know its Hawaii but $40 dollars for a photo, not worth it. They have tables seating about 10 people and so as you enter you are given the option of where to sit, given that there are available seats. As soon as seated i went and asked for a drink, since i am not familiar with too many drinks i asked the waiter for a suggestion and told him the juice i liked and was very good in suggesting i believe its called Bikini, YUMMY! As everyone is settling they have this little simple trio playing music. ADVICE: one of the bar tenders left after everyone got seated leaving only one left, and then midway through the event the other left. So makesure to stock up on your drinks before you go get dinner, as the bartenders do not stay until the end. The food was ok, for the price of the Luau i did expect more. Salad, a few sides, and then fish, meat, and pork. It was set up buffet style. After they have a few bite size desserts which are ok. Definately have the bread pudding with vanilla sauce! Show was entertaining, and the host was really into it, fire show at the end was cool. If you have nothing planned that night, then i suggest checking out the luau.

“Mediocre at the Marriott”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2009

Upon arrival at the Marriott we decided to attend their luau as it was our first night on the Big Island and it was an easy option for dinner and entertainment for that evening. Our expectations were not that high as we'd attended various dance performances and Island Nights on several islands in Tahiti and the Cook Islands which have the best dancers in the South Pacific. However, we did keep an open mind. Here's the good and the not so good:
Open Bar - unlimited drinks, especially good if you are a guest and don't need to drive back to your hotel. Mai Tais are watered down - give them a miss and order the Blue Hawaiians instead as they were excellent. Bartenders were entertaining and friendly.
Seating: Immediate seating upon arrival. Excellent view of the stage from any table with ability to move around for better pictures/videos. Our table was for ten with a mix of hotel guests and non-guests. Communal dining isn't for everyone, but we had a fun and lively group which made a big difference.
Imu: Unearthing of the pig was done just off to side with a good view for all for photos. Watch the preparation in the morning.
Food: Plentiful, but not spectacular either in quality or variety. Bread Pudding with vanilla sauce which they also offer at their breakfast buffet was very good.
Show: Very mediocre with an unenthusiastic host and dancers. Very uninspiring.
Cheesy plastic leis presented upon arrival for the purpose of taking a photograph which they sell at the end of the evening for a ridiculous price. Plop on the plastic lei, pose for a quick photo, and drop the plastic lei back in a bin - all at what is advertised as the most authentic luau on the island!
It's Hawaii after all , where everything seems to be 100USD per person, so If you're planning to make very good use of the open bar, you'll probably find this a good value, otherwise, they have clearly overpriced this luau.

If you're planning to do a luau, do one and do it at the Kona Village Resort which is a far more polished show in every way, from the setting, to the performances, and the food.

“very good!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2009

After reading some of the reviews, I was hesitant about booking this luau, but since we were staying in Waikoloa and it was on a Weds, which was my mother's birthday, we decided to go. We were pleasantly suprised. The staff was very friendly, we had a group of 15 of us, so they had reserved us enough tables for our group. The bar was open as soon as we arrived, so we all got drinks, which were great. They had every kind of alcohol and could mix any kind of drink you wanted, which was included in the price of the luau. They even made the kids virgin drinks called "red geckos". Our drinks were not watered down. The ground were great, overlooking A-bay. I thought the food was very good. They had mahi-mahi, teriyaki chicken, kalua pork, and many side dishes, mostly salads. They had a dessert table with a few kinds of cake, my 3 year old son loved the chocolate cake. I had the bread pudding with vanilla sauce and I thought it was very good. The "fashion show" was hilarous, and the fire dancer was awesome. They also dig up the pig from the earth oven and you get to watch them do it and can take pictures. All in all we had a great experience, the crowd loved the show, and our group was very pleased with the luau.

“Ok, but not great!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2008

We attended this luau at the begining of June. There were roughly 200 people that attended also, and the staff said that was a really small group. I guess usually it is double that size. The luau itself was fun. it's always nice to experiene other cultures. The down side of it is that the food wasn't that great, and the drinks weren't that strong. I had at least 4 or 5 drinks within a couple of hours and wasn't even tipsy. Everyone at our table thought the food was lacking. The do cook the pig in an underground pit which is kind of cool to see, but kind of made me not want to eat it!!!
