We travel to the Big Island 2-4 times per year for the last 8 years, so when it is just the two of us or just our family we do not bother with luaus anymore however when friends go with us that haven't been before we always take them. We have been to several and for us since we stay in the Waikaloa Village, we attend this one. It is very kid friendly, the Imu ceremony is fun, the food is good (realistically, Kailua pork, is Kailua pork, poi is poi). This hotel use to be the Sheraton and it was the same show then. The costumes are beautiful, the dancers are beautiful (my husband and I each have our favorites), the drinks although week are free (trick to a stiffer drink is tipping). I suggest springing for the upgraded seating, it's a better view and the chances of getting your hubby up on stage is better, wink, wink. We have been to many, many luaus and if you're staying in the Waikaloa Village this is the one to go to, you don't have to deal with the traffic trying to get into Kona in the afternoon, a shuttle is offered village wide and the drivers are always a lot of fun, especially afterwards. Some of the others nearby, one in particular are much to theatrical and overdone. I can't remember the name of the boat but if you want a fun, fun, fun experience on the water and don't mind eating family style or people dancing on the tables you have to track this one down and go!!!! We will be going back to the Big Island next week and since we are once again taking someone that has never been to Hawaii, we will once again be attending the luau at The Royal Luau.
