“Waikoloa Golf is a rip off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2011

I have been playing golf at Waikoloa for about 30 years of vacations here. In the past it was always a treat for the great scenery and the quality of the golf courses.

No longer. The golf course is in terrible shape. It can be compared to the poorest of a municipal course. And they do not warn you when they take your $100 plus for a round.

According to one employee, management laid off half of the grounds keepers and closed the Waikoloa Beach course club house.

The condition of this course is a tragedy. If I was a property owner here I would be really upset because the long term effect on property values has to be signicant.

“Decent course, with one very nice hole.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2011

This course is nice. It isn't extraordinary, though the price might suggest that it is. The course is well designed and very playable for all levels of golfer. It is pretty short, though, and relatively easy for the lower handicap player. I would describe it as a fun, and fair course. It isn't in particularly good condition, though it isn't in bad condition either. The greens especially are bermuda and, thus are a little ragged and were pretty slow compared to mainland courses. The par 5 seventh, is particularly impressive though. This hole is placed along the coast and is a dogleg left that places the approach shot(s) along the ocean. There is a small cliff that is lined with jagged lava rocks, which are pounded by the surf. I was able to see whales swimming in the ocean and jumping, and playing. The hole is short (505 yards or so) and is thus reachable after a good drive. I hit 3 wood, 3 wood and was there, but the hole is fun and beautiful, because the second shot is a dangerous one with the ocean right, if you decide to go for it. I enjoyed the course and I would recommend it, though I have heard that Mauna Kea and Hapuna are also excellent, and might be better choices.

“Terrible Condition, Not Worth the Money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2010

After playing a few other courses on the Big Island, I decided to give this one a shot as I like the area. It was apparent right from the first hole that what I was playing was more akin to a public city-owned course. Poor signage, lack of good hole descriptions and trashed tee boxes and fairways. In some areas, the grass had died completely and was unplayable. And as a bonus, the grounds workers kept running weed eaters and other machinery right in from of me as I was teeing off. After my round, I complained to the on-duty manager that if I was going to be relieved of +150 bucks, I expected something much nicer. he simply shrugged.

“Like Playing over water? If so, you'll love this course”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2006

If you like the challenge of playing over and near water, you will love this course. Water comes into play on 5 of the front nine holes, playing over water on four of them. The reward on the back nine is the spectacular ocean view on the 12th hole assuming you have successfuly traversed the lava fields on the way! The only negatives here are the bunkers which are not at all beach-like -- they are hard gravel!
