“Treat Yourself”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

If you're staying in any of the Waikoloa hotels or in the Mauna Lani area, please, Please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and make the 10 minute drive to Waikoloa Village and Pueo's Osteria. It's exactly as advertised -- great Italian food in a fun, casual atmosphere.

My wife and I shared the Bruschetta to start. The main taste that came through was: freshness. Very easy to eat and enjoy. My wife wanted a simple salad with some additions. When she asked if she could add a chicken breast and some capers, our waitress Courtney said, "Of course, no problem." It was exactly what my wife wanted. Again, quality and fresh were the two major thoughts.

I had the wild boar pappardelle which was delicious.

What's nice is the kitchen lets the fresh ingredients speak (or taste) for themselves without the need to add heavy sauces or dressings.

I was really happy to see the restaurant filling up on a Tuesday evening.

Again, please support this place; it deserves it. Please do yourself a favor and eat here.

“Wonderful Addition to the Area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

We had dinner last night and it was great. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and our cheerful, friendly server quickly took our drink order and filled us in on the special of the evening. The room was attractive and about 3/4 filled with young couples, families with kids and older adults, all enjoying their food. The pizza choices looked good. We considered the goat cheese and pancetta (unsmoked Italian bacon) but went with the mozzarella/arugula pizza instead. It had a great crispy crust and crispy prosciutto on it. It was a treat. We also shared the incredibly tender meatballs and an order of bruschetta topped with fresh, local tomatoes. For entrees we had the chicken cannelloni, veal parmesan and wild boar pappardelle. Tender chicken pieces were mixed with a rich cream sauce and rolled into tender pasta sheets. Then more sauce was added and the top slightly browned. The veal cutlets were very tender and perfectly coated and cooked. The wild boar was shredded and very tender and mixed with a very lightly sauced pasta. Dessert was a wonderfully light and tasty limoncello panne cotta. Wine prices by the glass were reasonable and the selection good.

Throughout the mean, in addition to attention by our server, a very attentive other woman circulated throughout the room cheerfully greeting all the guests and making sure the meal was to our liking. We thoroughly enjoyed this dinner and plan on eating here again on our next trip to the area. The late night bar menu looks appealing and that may have to be our next visit. We hope they keep up the good work!

“Great Sunday Brunch--At Reasonable Prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

Pueo Osteria is located in Waikoloa Village--up the mountain road and not on the beach at the Waikoloa Resort. The owner/chef used to work at the Four Seasons Hualalai.

The breakfast and lunch items are very good and very reasonably priced compared to the resorts. The signature dish--Lemon-infused Pancakes--are especially good.

We have been here four times now, and each new dish is a treat.

I highly recommend Pueo if you are looking for a special place for brunch.

“Hilariously bad”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

My wife and I laughed about how awful our experience at this place was. I think this was the most awkward dinner we ever had. We walked in there drawn by the sound of the crowd, which turned out to be exclusively 70+. We ordered a pizza with goat cheese. Our pizza arrived promptly but was dappled with slices of bacon and we don't eat that. Sorry. Apparently the menu item had used an obscure term for bacon that we in our ignorance had not understood. Yuck. The bacon itself did not seem to be any special kind though, just what people eat with eggs in the morning.

They offered to make us a new pizza without bacon but I think it was the same one with bacon removed and put back in the oven. It was an oily and unpleasant affair. Great if all you want to eat is carbs and fat. The frozen pizza we microwaved a few days ago was a delicacy compared to this. The waitress and other hostesses were quite friendly though and the lager was excellent.

Don't eat here. Instead go to the sandwich shop in the corner or the tiny Mexican and Thai places at the same shipping plaza.

“Great new restaurant on Kohala Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

We were delighted to find this new restaurant in Waikoloa Village. We ended up eating there 3 times over the course of our 2 week stay in the area so we were able to try a variety of items and were served by different people. The service was very friendly and attentive. The food was really excellent. The Burratta with WOW tomatoes was fabulous. Haven't had mozzarella that fresh since Italy. We were impressed with the Veal Scallopini which I find can be soggy with sauce but this had just the right amount of breading which gave it a nice texture. Pizzas were good as was the pasta. All the sauces have San Marzano tomatoes which are evident in the savory flavor. The wine list is very fairly priced.

We had a hiccup the first night when a new server brought out the wrong pizza. Courtney (great server) was training him and was quick to apologize and said she would get the right one out quickly which she did. Such an incident could have made it out last visit but the way it was handled was so smooth that we came back 2 more times. The second visit Courtney served us and said she was "honored" we came back after the mishap. Later the owner came over and said he had heard about the incident and wanted to personally apologize. Things like that can happen with a new server but the way such a thing is handled really shows how well trained an establishment is. Clearly the staff has the Four Seasons (the chef/owner was the head chef there) training relative to customer service.
