“Incredible location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

We recently had lunch at Lava Lava while on the Big Island for a business meeting. Our neighbor had recommended it to us, and we're glad we took the recommendation. I read reviews before we left for Hawaii, so I was aware of the comments on questionable service. We arrived early and waited for the restaurant to open, by walking on the beautiful beach where it is located. We had no problems being seated. The food was good--we opted for a salad for lunch, and the service we received was great. Perhaps we were lucky, as the number of visitors to Waikoloa seemed to be down, compared to other visits, but wait staff seemed to be constantly checking to insure that we were happy. The location is incredible, right on the beach, and it's very restful to relax and watch the ocean while you eat your food. The restaurant is located next to the beach park located behind the Marriott.

“Beach Club”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

We visited this place when we were staying over in Waikoloa Village for our daughter's wedding. You must make reservations or you will be waiting a long time. The place is a little hard to find and very crowded.

The bartender's do a good job of trying to meet everyone's demand. it is best to go up to the bar and get your own drinks while you are waiting for your table, as the bar maids seems to be overwhelmed.

Dinner was very good. I had the Seared Ahi, others had the Filet, Terriyaki Beef and everyone enjoyed their meal. I would say the drinks are the best we had in this area.

“No Aloha”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

We drove 2 hours from Hilo to celebrate a special birthday. We had made dinner reservations early because it was a Saturday night. When we arrived the hostess just stood behind the counter playing with an iPad for several minutes before she acknowledged us. Then she said "just wait" and she left. A few minutes later a young man came up and said to wait because the waitress was throwing the happy hour people out from our table. He expained with great enthusiasm how they throw people out at dinner time. It seemed very strange. After about 5 minutes the hostess came back and took us to a table directly in front of the live music with huge speakers. I told her we would like another table because we wouldn't be able to have a conversation at this table. She acted very peeved and kept pointing at her iPad saying they would have to redo their seating. Then she said we had to return to the front desk. The young man said he had all the reservations on his iPad and it was like a puzzle and if we changed tables it ruined it. Since we could see at least 6 empty tables for 4 in the area away from the music, I said we still wanted another table. He very huffily said, " I'll show you what we have." The table he showed us was fine and when I said we would take it, he said, "O.K. but you have to leave by 6:30" and waived his iPad at me and said something again about his puzzle. At this point I could barely be civil but I did not want to ruin the evening for my friends. They were appalled! When our waitress came I told her to give me the check and that we were not leaving at 6:30. She seemed really embarrassed and made a big effort to provide us excellent service. Even with her efforts one our orders, a LLBC burger came terribly over cooked and had to be returned and took another 20 minutes.

In 50 years in Hawaii I have never been treated with such rudeness. What is even more disturbing is that I think the host and hostess were completely clueless to how rude they were being. They seemed way more interested in making their iPads happy than their customers! Needless to say, we won't be going back and will tell others to avoid this over priced, rude, mediocre food establishment!!

“Great Food - not so great service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

Went to Lava Lava club last night. Beautiful setting - just beautiful. Food was really flavorful. Service was slow - stood a long time before being acknowledged....sat a long time before being acknowledged....finally got our waiter to come over and he seemed in a hurry to take our order and go home. They sat us at 8:45 and the kitchen closed at 9, so we ordered in a hurry.

The food was really good though. Just felt like they really didn't want our business (maybe they didn't...)

“Over priced with average food and weak drinks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

We were really looking forward to visiting this restaurant. The restaurant is located on the beach. Looks like it would be wonderful. It was sad to find out that it's not. The drinks are weak and the food only OK. Slow and poor service. The atmosphere is chaotic. Really sad considering the location. We had two weak mai tais and two entrees for a cost of over $100! Will not be back.
