'A' beach is in a convenient locations. It isn't a surfing place -- waves are very modest. Typically pretty quiet. The sand (as is the case in nearly all the beaches on the Big Island) is not 'soft' -- not like say Waikiki on Oahu. So if visiting, it makes sense to have mats or beach chairs. There is a bit of shade from the palm trees. There are also facilities (bathrooms and wash off showers) available.
