“A different Hawaii”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2009

I should have written about this long ago, but I keep thinking of the great experience and wishing I were back there. After a week on the beach, this was the perfect way to see the volcano. Yes, it rained every day, hence the rain forest, but I loved the peacefulness. My biggest problem was getting out of my robe and away from my book to go sight seeing. Breakfast was great! Glass ceilings echoed the rain, fireplace, hot tea w/honey. What more could you want. If you need TV and internet 24/7, this is not for you, but if you love nature, go ahead. We spent three nights, but the perfect trip would be two, as that was about how much time it took to see the volcano and there is not a lot up there other wise.

This little cottage was wonderful. I wish every place we stayed on the big island was as cozy and comfortable as the Artist's Cottage. We enjoyed the lovely gardens, the solitude and the proximity to Volcano National Park. After long days of adventuring, we ate at the great restaurants in Volcano Village: Thai Thai and Lava Rock Cafe. At night we retreated to the Artist's Cottage and watched a DVD of Sherlock Holmes in bed. Bliss!
It was also great to have a full kitchen with a fridge stocked with breakfast foods and local sodas. The fresh flower arrangements in every room were breathtaking. This small space has lots of character. Aloha!

Ira Ono's bed and breakfast cottage is a living work of art. The cottage is intimate and the interior decor is soothing to the mind and spirit. Breakfast is simple, good coffee, fresh fruit and freshly baked banana break . . . just right! The kitchenette is very well equipped. You can take in the art and have an exceptionally good lunch in the Volcano Garden Arts Gallery. The cottage is conveniently located, just minutes away from the entrance to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The location of this lodging is perfect if you want to explore Volcano National Park. Easy to come and go from, easy to find, and close to many central attractions in the park and in the little town of Volcano. If you enjoy beauty and art, nature and peace, privacy and a cozy cottage feeling this is wonderful. The cafe on the grounds was wonderful, the gallery, also on the grounds, was interesting and good shopping! The grounds themselves are beautiful and peaceful. The hospitality was just great! We truly enjoyed this unique place and would definetly go back again.

The Volcano Artist Cottage was easy to find, impeccably appointed, immaculate and well thought out for the visitor. Located in the village of Volcano, is it located close to all of the restaurants, national park and on the same property as the best collection of local artists' work in the area- Volcano Garden Arts. We were greated by the porprietor with a hot cup of herbal tea and a cookie as we visited in his gallery, toured the gardens and met Ernest, the goat. Quite an unusual and enjuvenating spot!

We loved this place! It was only about two miles from Volcano National Park which we explored to its fullest. The cottage itself was a goldmine. Ira, the owner, has gone to great lengths to make sure that guests want for nothing. It has a full kitchen, wonderful shower, and beautiful surroundings. I highly recommend it!

We arrived at the cottage in the evening (we admit, we forgot to call and warn them we'd be arriving after check-in hours of 3-5pm), wet and cold from a drizzly day in Volcanoes National Park. First of all, finding this place in the dark is difficult and the entry instructions into the property are confusing and not intuitive. There is no indication where to park or really any sign of life.
Once we called Ira and were directed to the cottage we found it freezing cold and went about trying to start up the propane heater in the wall. There is a 10-step process for turning on this heater, but there's no guarantee it will work. We got it started after half an hour of trying (and 2 calls to Ira) that evening, but could not get it started again the next morning. According to the guestbook, other people have had similar troubles.
The cottage itself is VERY small. The two of us plus our luggage took up all available floor space in the main room. The bathroom is almost as big as the rest of the cottage, which is nice, but a little ridiculous. The breakfast items were (banana bread, fruits, coffee, tea, yogurt, and granola) were about the only redeeming factor. The bed had a heated mattress pad, which was very nice except one of the controllers didn't work, so only half the bed heated up. Plus, the controllers were backward, so they were opposite of the side which they controlled.
All in all, we paid the same price to stay in a sumptuous B&B in Hilo. There, we were served a huge breakfast every morning and stayed in a room with ample space, temperature control, and luxurious decor. I don't understand how the owners of the cottage can justify the price, considering the lack of some basic amenities. We intentionally seek out independent and unique places to stay when we travel (we are definitely B&B people, not Hilton people). Usually these reward us with wonderful experiences, but our stay at the Volcano Artists Cottage was not one of those.
