I wish I could give this cottage a higher rating because Ira, the owner, is such a delightful person. But the cottage is so small that it was not a pleasant place to stay, in my subjective opinion. The bed is pushed sideways into an alcove, so one person has to climb over the other to get out during the night; there is also some kind of water pump outside the bedroom window that runs 24 hours a day. I hate to guess, but I would say that the kitchen-dining-living area is about 10 feet by 6 feet, and the bedroom area not covered by the bed is about 7 feet by 3 feet. Those are very small areas. The bathroom, which has been added on, is large. The landscaping is nice and, once the art gallery closes at 5, you are all by yourself with all the privacy anyone could want. A washer and dryer is available outside of the gallery. WiFi is adequate. Like all of Volcano, it is only a couple of miles to the National Park entrance.

We stayed here three nights with our one-year-old son and loved everything about it. It definitely is small and slightly rustic, but we are a cozy small family (our son slept on a futon on the floor) who enjoy cozy small spaces. Artistic design touches everywhere in and around the cottage and gardens.
It's unassuming and definitely not a luxury place, but has everything you need in the kitchenette (although you'd better bring your groceries from Kona or Hilo, because there's no real market in town). The bathroom is gorgeous. As for the low water pressure, it makes sense when you recognize that it's running on collected rainwater in this true rainforest location, so I think Ira does everything he can to encourage folks to conserve. Especially because the shower is so lovely you want to stay in it a while! The outdoor hot tub was a pleasant surprise for us.
The whole place is totally private - there is only the one unit, and Ira leaves at night - so it is just you and Ernest the goat, who is also charming. Ira is a delightful host. He was very accommodating when the propane heater cut out one chilly evening; he came right over and fixed the situation. Volcano is in a rainforest, so everything does stay ever so slightly damp and musty, but totally worth it if you remember where you are.
We loved the cafe as well - simple, delicious vegetarian food and beautiful pastry.

if you like cozy little spaces, this is for you. if you like wide open huge rooms, this is not for you. We loved it. Super cute, unprepossessing. The hot tube was heavenly. also features a cute little kitchenette. Drawbacks: shower pressure is low (but sufficient if you have chin length hair), quite small, only one chair to relax in. Despite this, we felt instantly at home. Stayed 2 nights.

We stayed here for one night while visiting Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is cute but dated. While the bathroom has been recently added, the water pressure for the shower is disappointing. Similarly the hot tub is on its last legs.

On the plus side, this cottage is very private and pleasant. You have a little kitchen, a nice heater (it gets cold at night) and a nearby pet goat. Also the lady that cleaned the place was awesome (somewhat the opposite of the lady in the cafe).

On the downside the setting around the cottage is of water tanks and other plumbing. The bed is not very long and runs to the wall, so if you're too much over six feet you might be uncomfortable. On that note, the mattress is also due for replacement.

Also, the food at the cafe was okay but nothing special. It was also all vegetarian which I hadn't noticed from skimming reviews.

Recently, my husband and I stayed at "The Artist Cottage" in Volcano Village while we visited nearby Volcano National Park on the big island of Hawaii. We were delighted with this charming and comfortable cottage surrounded by jungle flora and a unique garden decorated with lovely art collected by or created by the owner, Ira Ono who proved to be a welcoming and thoughtful host. We arrived early from Kona and had a delectable, vegetarian lunch, a tasty mushroom soup for me and a rich corn chowder for my husband followed by salad and quiche at the onsite Cafe Ono, adjacent to the extensive art gallery also on the property. Ono means "delicious" in Hawaiian and it was. We retreated to our cottage and enjoyed the comfy bed, extensive library and spacious bathroom with an elegant oriental style. Breakfast was a choice of fresh local fruits, Papaya, guava, banana, apple, yogurts, and granola with coffee or tea--lovely. Also, after coming home from a long hike in the park we enjoyed the hot tub situated behind the house surrounded by colorful flowers, ferns and vines, and snuggled in the thick bathrobes thoughtfully provided by our host after our soak. Before leaving we purchased some unique, locally-created jewelry and art from the lovely gallery. (Cottage guests enjoy a 10% discount at both Cafe Ono and The Volcano Garden Arts Gallery). We will return for sure.

Room Tip: There is only one cottage on the property which guarantees restful silence at night.

My husband and I stayed recently at Ira's amazing Artist Cottage for three nights. I cannot put into words what a wonderful, relaxing, experience we had. When we arrived were greeted with such enthusiam and warmth, you would think we were staying with family. We were shown to the cottage and had a mini tour of where to find all that we needed, how to work the hot tub etc and also told not to hesitate to ask, should we need anything. The cottage is "cozy" and artfully decorated with a lovely rustic feel to it. It is supplied with a little tv, a few dvd's, books and enough kitchen supplies to cook a small meal, if so desired. The bathroom is quite large and overlooks the gardens with a "walk in shower" (no tub). The gardens are absolutely beautiful and for those inclined, are a peaceful, zen place to meditate. While touring the gardens you will meet Ernest, the resident goat. He is as funny and lovely as everyone else there. Everyday we would make a point to go over and have a visit with Ernest...I think he is the luckiest goat in the world. The cottage is ideally located to Volcanos National Park, which we spent three days visiting. In the town of Volcano there is a fantastic Thai restaurant where we got take out and ate the cottage. The Artist Cottage is not just a place to rest your head, but a place to rest your soul. I highly recommend staying there and would go back in a heartbeat. If you cannot stay there, I would recommend dropping in to the cafe and store - lots of great locally made jewelery & other items.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights while we toured Volcano National Park. We loved our little cottage! It is very convenient to the park and the grounds are beautiful. I loved all of the little touches that were throughout the cottage. The only thing I would add would be some measuring cups in the kitchen.
The bathroom is absolutely beautiful and I loved just picking out a book to read before I went to bed. We had a wonderful time!
