“Must Stay while on the Big Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2007

Hard to say anything more than has already been said here. Basically, staying here is like having your own personal 5 star beautiful cabin/villa right in the middel of the rain forest. Kay the owner treats you first class the whole way. If you are the big resort type person (think Four Seasons) this probably isn't for you. But if you enjoy privacy without any sacrifices, this is your place. And so very close to Volcano National Park. Would stay here again and again and again. Perfection.

This is a quiet slice of heaven. Very private, serene, and beautiful. We liked having a refuge after hiking around all day that we could use the wonderful hot tub or sit on our deck. Eating breakfast out there each morning by the big ferns and such was wonderful. We loved our round room.

After reading and hearing from friends horror stories of trying to find a decent place to stay in Volcano Village and not wanting to go to equally bad for places to stay in Hilo (and drive), we were thrilled to find this place - again, Tripadvisor has never steered us wrong! This is just about the same price or a touch more than others in the area -and you get such QUALITY and peacefulness. We've never stayed any place like it. You can't go wrong here.

A little more food in the morning would have been nice for the "main course" portion - all your food is provided the day before for you to serve yourself in the morning which was nice to eat in our robes and a time of our choosing on our deck all alone - but we needed a little more sustinance much before lunch - though what they did provide was yummy.

Other that - nothing but the best things to say about the place. You MUST eat at the Kilaeula Inn on Old Volacno Highway just around the corner from this lodge - it had awesome meals and such a great ambiance! Wild game cooked in delicious ways and great wines! It truly is one of the best meals on the Island! We ate there two nights in a row and then missed it when we moved on to Waimea and the Kohala Coast! If it was near where we lived we would definitely eat there a couple times a month - don't miss it (it's not for kids though - but a great romantic and gastronomical delight.

This B&B is so private and peaceful, it is perfect after tiring days when you just want to rest. Be sure to stay here!

  • Liked — The awesome room and privacy
  • Disliked — Wanted a little more for breakfast (which they may have provided, but we don't like to ask)

We chose the Volcano Village Lodge because we fell in love with the architecture and the rainforest environment as shown on their web site. We were especially drawn to the unit called Kilauea which had three walls with floor to ceiling windows opening into the rainforest.

The space turned out to be perfect for us plus there was a hot tub about 25 feet away. We appreciated the “Tree House”, the cottage nickname, even more when we settled in. It was just a beautiful environment and the attention to detail was obvious everywhere. It felt secluded and away from all our cares. At night there was the sound of crickets and the rain on the roof, a gas fireplace, popcorn and an excellent volcano DVD to watch. We woke up mornings with a choice of one of many great music CDs. For breakfast there was always something new in the refrigerator to warm up, prepared the day before so we could get up on our own schedule, a quiche or frittata or egg tortilla and a fresh strawberry papaya and bananas, yogurt, cereal, Kona coffee. Snacks and bottled water were provided for our day trips. There are many resources in the main lodge, computer, internet access, books and a phone.

Kay was a wonderful, warm and charming innkeeper. She had set out champagne and chocolate dipped strawberries for our arrival! (She knew it was our first wedding anniversary). Kay also set up an appointment for us for lomilomi massages in our cabin that were SO good we did it again before we left. And she advised us on restaurants and hiking / helicopter access to the volcano. Our stay is now a lovely memory and we hope to return soon.

The volcano village lodge was so wonderful. It was so great, we wanted to stay forever! The owner is very personable and helpful and the accomodations were unbelievably beautiful...we could not have asked for a nicer place to stay in Volcano. We will return for sure!

We just returned from our latest trip to Hawaii. I must say, that out of all the accomodations we've ever stayed at over the years, the Volcano Village Lodge is the best! Kay, the owner, has thought of everything to make sure you are comfortable and taken care of. Our stay at Mauna Kea was very relaxing, and felt as if we were at a spa. Next time, we'll be booking a longer stay! Thanks Kay, for everything!

This is the perfect b&b and the best place we stayed on the big island. I have never stayed anywhere like it: it sounds cliched but it truly was peaceful, almost mystical, to stay here. The grounds are amazing and waking up in the middle of a (cultivated) rain forest is something I will never forget. The white cedar used in the Mauna Kea was quite soothing and I keep fantasizing about creating a space like that room for work and relaxation. Kay was an extremely gracious host -- highly recommended.

This was the most fantastic place we have ever stayed. 6 stars in my book. The grounds are wonderful and full of surprises. Every unit is seperate with lots of privacy. Kay Lee, the owner, goes way beyond what is expected. She provides you with breakfast in your refrigerator every morning of fresh fruit and/or home made cooking. It is tranquil and a wonderful place to meditate and relax. There are no televisions however she provides a CD player with wonderful relaxing music to listen to as you sit on your private Lanai. We had our wedding on her premises and it was a wonderful and intimate setting. If you are looking for a true "getaway" yet close to the park with thousands of miles of trails, not to mention Pele herself. This is your place. It is clean and comfortable. I would recommend it for anyone who really needs to get away from it all. Staying here was a truly spiritual experience
