This little hidden away gem was the perfect place for us to stay. John made sure that the place was spotless and stocked with the little things that you often forget (cotton swabs)
The website is slightly inaccurate, there is no cold meats, cheese or yogurts in the breakfast, although some mornings do have a hot sausage egg and cheese croissant. Although the selections of fruits and pastry items are absolutely delicious sometimes we had no idea what we were eating. It would be nice to add a fruit identification guide into the 'Local Info' book that is placed next to the bed.
There were no bath robes or slippers provided, which the website stated, but the towels were changed daily when he made the bed and emptied the trash.
The floor (and room) can get a little cold in the early morning hours, (we stayed at the end of winter) and the gas fireplace and small heater next to the toilet don't do much for compensating for the cold wooden floor. This didn't detract from the experience, it just meant that my wife and I would jest over who would have to brave the cold to let John in with breakfast.
Breakfast always arrived between 8:00 am and 8:05 am, which is when he prearranged to deliver it each morning, I have heard this time is flexible but it worked for us. The only morning it was as late as 8:05 am was because I heard someone talking to him delaying him from delivering. He patiently waits for you to let him in and leaves the food wherever you request him to.
John is available and very helpful at almost all hours of the day and night. Tell him of your plans while you are there, he will help to make them better.
There was also a hot tub on site, but it didn't appear to be operational, it was blocked off behind screens.
The main reason I gave Location 4 points instead of 5 was because of the distance from everything else.
Volcano is a very small town with only 3-4 places to eat and only 2 of them open past 5 pm at night. There is no kitchen in the room we stayed at, and even though we did use the mini fridge, there was no microwave to reheat meals.
You are very close to the Volcano Park (5-10 minutes), but about an 1.5 hours from the lava flows (its actually closer to Hilo right now because of how the roads are) and there are very few other activities in the area. Be prepared for a bit of a drive (45 minute minimum) to anywhere else you want to go.
All of the above hardly subtracted from the awesome experience it is to stay at Lotus Garden.
