“Very pleasant stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2005

Barbara and Ernie are very gracious hosts. They made us feel like old friends. We rented two rooms (the cottage and the master suite) as we are travelling with two small children. The rooms were very clean and the breakfast delicious. (fresh fruit, coffee, eggs, sausage, bagel, etc etc!) Nice and close to the park.

There were toys available for our little girl to play with and Barbara even fixed her a bag of snacks to take to the park.

We will certainly stay here again.

It was one of the best places we've stayed. U'ilani was exceptionally nice and it was a pleasure staying here. Breakfasts were great and the Alii Room was very nice. We did not have problems with it being hot in the room. In fact, we used the comforter each night. It was 3 miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and was an ideal location for doing hiking in the park. Volcano is a cute little town and the Thai Thai restaurant was excellent. We ate there every night. I would definitely recommend staying at this place and we'll stay here again when we return to Volcano. If you want a delightful place to stay with a delightful hostess, you won't be disappointed.

We spent one night at the Volcano Cedar Cottage on January 26, 2005. My sister and her husband stayed in the Alii Master Suite, and my husband and I stayed in the Ohia Room. We found the rooms to be very charming, and the resident manager U’ilani was very hospitable.

We arrived about 3 pm, and she was there to greet us warmly. These two rooms are accessed by taking a gravel pathway around to the back of the house. Both rooms were very hot and stuffy when we arrived, so we opened the windows and turned on the ceiling fans. The Ohia Room cooled down overnight because of a cross-breeze, but the Alii Suite was hot all night, and the ceiling fan made too much noise to be turned on while trying to sleep.

The Alii Master suite had a queen sized bed and a daybed in it, and a large bathroom with bathtub and shower, and two sinks. The Ohia room had a queen sized bed and a small bathroom with shower only. Both rooms have a small refrigerator, coffee pot, coffee (both reg and decaf), sugar, creamer, etc. in the closet.

Each room has it’s own little lanai, and the tropical grounds are kept up nicely. U’ilani informed us that she would lock our doors from the inside if she was going to be gone, so we wouldn’t be able to access the great room to check our emails until she returned.

U’ilani was very accommodating when we asked if breakfast could be at 7 am the next morning instead of 8 am, since we had to catch an earlier flight. She informed the guests staying in the Haku cottage (they were agreeable also), and we all had a good breakfast of fresh local fruit, English muffins, bacon, scrambled eggs, rice and juice.

I would recommend the Volcano Cedar Cottage (pics and rates at volcanocc.com) to anyone visiting the Volcano National Park. It’s on the upwind side of the mountain, so there were no fumes or smells. It’s back off of the highway, so it is very quiet. It’s very clean and comfortable, and we felt very welcomed.
