“Good burger”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013 via mobile

Burger was awesome (beef is grass fed). Don't recommend the Mahi Mahi (little fishy and have had a lot better).

“Efficient tourist restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

With only an hour's notice, we phoned the Lava Rock to say that about 30 people wanted to come for lunch. They obliged...they gave us about 10 options to order over the phone. When a couple of us arrived half-an-hour early, our part of the restaurant was filled with a busload of people. But by our designated time, the place was clean and our pre-ordered lunches were gradually brought out (with some mistakes, like chicken instead of pork sandwich and cheeseburgers without the cheese). The restaurant also managed to provide a birthday cake with the one hour's notice. The food was average in quality, but with no real problems. The one-person-at-a-time bathrooms were inadequate for the volume of business and parking was scarce.

“homey cafe”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

I've been coming here for years. I love it. Offers a variety of dishes and reasonably priced. Near a cute little shop "Kilauea Kreations" that has great souvenirs.

“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

This little cafe was just what you need after a long day of hiking and exploring the Hawai'i Volcanos National Park. The staff is SUPER friendly and the food is great, and the desserts are DELICIOUS! We were staying in a bungalow in Volcano, so after a day of driving down to see the lava flow off of 130 and an absolutely horrible meal in Kuristown Cafe (if you see it on your travels, KEEP DRIVING!) we needed a pick-me-up and decided to stop and see if we could get some desserts to take back to have with a glass of wine. We had the Mac Nut pie and their French Silk (Chocolate mousse) pie - and they were delicious! We went back for lunch the next day and had the same waitress (Maria I think it said on the receipt) and she was AMAZING! So friendly! On our last night, we were going to try and get into the Kiluea Lodge and after looking at their menu (anteloppe filet?!?!) we decided that we would much rather go back to the Lava Rock Cafe. Dessert that night was a Pumpkin pie with Macademia Nut crust - seriously the best dessert I've ever tried.

“Pretty standard diner, hits the spot after a long day of hiking.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

I read some very unfavorable reviews of this place while we were waiting to order which almost caused us to leave before we put our orders in. But, our server was really friendly and we were starving so we stayed put. The food was fine, nothing outstanding but my mom enjoyed the coconut shrimp and I tried saiman for the first time, which was also good. It wasn't pricey, nor was the food exceptional, but our service was great and it hit the spot after spending the day in the park. I felt some of the other reviews were unnecessarily harsh.
