“In the rain forest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2009

We had one of the Volcano Inn units on 2nd Avenue, and enjoyed our one night stay very much. Our unit had a kitchenette, and the trademark corner window with ferns and trees growing just outside the glass. It lacked for nothing. We did not reserve, just called that morning, since we don't like to schedule ourselves too much. I would consider making a reservation if there is a next visit to Volcano National Park, because it was a very nice accomodation. The owner has built the units himself, with good quality materials and thoughtful details.

After reading the reviews here and seeing the pictures, I knew I would love this place, and I did. We were staying in Kona at a timeshare, but it is a 3 hour drive to the Volcano, so we needed somewhere to stay for one night. We stayed in the corner window room, Nene, surrounded by tree ferns and anthuriums. It is all so charming.

Following the directions they provided, we had no problem finding. Then we walked down a beautiful path thru the woods to our room. They have thought of everything. When you open the room, you use the key and it turns on the power in the unit. When you leave and remove the key, the power goes off (except for the frig). When we entered, I got a big smile. The quilt on the bed, rug on the bamboo flooring, the huge corner window view, coffe, creamer, coffee maker, big container of drinking water, heated towell bar, wifi, dehumidifier, posted instructions on anything you might need to know, clean bathroom, nice fluffy towells, comfortable bed, TV, skylights, etc. Everything is natural and efficient too. It was so private that we left the curtains open so when we woke we saw the view out the windows. So pleasant.

Anyway, we truly enjoyed our brief stay. The owners are very friendly people. I spent a little time talking and could have spent more time, but we had places to go and he had work to do around the place.

I can't remember when I have ever been so impressed with a room.

We booked a two night stay at Volcano Inn & were thoroughly pleased. We had the Puepueho (sp?) Room, a corner room and enjoyed the quiet seclusion. This particular room is part of a two room building, located down a short rainforest covered path. Our room was quite adequate - queen bed, small refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster. The room was clean - from the bed to the bathtub. The best feature of the room is a large corner window with a view of the rainforest. You wake up feeling relaxed and refreshed for a day trip to nearby (5 to 10 min drive) Volcanoes National Park. Volcano Village is an easy five minute trip for conveniences - gas, food, post office.
Just a reminder, there is no maid service or meals associated with the room but restaurants are available in Volcano Village or Hilo (25 miles).

As part of our annual vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii we enjoy visiting Volcano National Park for the great hiking trails and lava viewing when Pele is cooperating. It is truly a magical place. We base ourselves on the Kona side of the island and in the past have left very early in the morning to make the 180+ mile roundtrip drive in order to spend a full day at the Park. After hiking all day, viewing lava flows, etc. the last thing we want to do is drive 2+ hours over a winding road in the dark so we began looking for accomodations near the park. We have stayed in the small cabins operated by the Volcano House for $59/night. There is a community bath/shower available for your use. These cabins are unheated and the experience is about as close to camping in a tent as you can get. Next, we have stayed at the Volcano House in their Ohia wing. This building used to be the ranger station and was converted to a hotel in the 40's. The rooms are small, musty and, for what you get, expensive at around $130/night. The rooms overlooking the crater are priced higher but if you want the same hotel where Mark Twain stayed this might be for you. This February I was searching online for another option and came across the Volcano Inn, which turned out to be like a B&B without the breakfast. They are located in Volcano Village which is about a mile from the Park entrance. We stayed for two nights and the cost was $69/night+tax. Our room had a queen sized bed, private bath and cable TV. The room was one of the cleanest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in. Our room had an outside entrance making it feel very private. It is located in a quiet jungle like setting with ferns everywhere. The complex has a common area with access to kitchen facilities, coffee maker, microwave, etc. Also available was a computer with internet access. The Inn is operated by a husband and wife team. He has lived on the Big Island for many years and was interesting to talk with and a good source of local knowledge. I will stay at the Volcano Inn on my next trip to the Park and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting clean, quiet and reasonable lodging.

We opened the door, and just stopped and said "Wow". Our room was enormous, and stunningly beautiful. It gets chilly at that elevation at night, but the electric blanket kept us nice and warm. Well-stocked full kitchen. The only downside was the sometimes sporadic availability of hot water and water pressure, presumably the result of the solar water heating system. I would definately consider staying here again.

If you are planning a vacation in Hilo or volcano area - this is the place for you. Romantic and clean, very friendly and helpful staff. The staff was even gracious to answer my questions about activities in the area. We(family of 4 adults) stayed here with my sister and her husband and booked two rooms, both families were very happy with the accommodations - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
