Spent two nights at Kate's "Kahi Malu" here and loved it – the cottage is fresh, clean, spacious and complete with all equipment to ensure the most comfortable stay. The master bedroom was huge, the bed pure relaxation, and the little fireplace a cosy accompaniment to our pre-dawn coffees, when the temperature was chilly.

Kathryn is a font of local knowledge, and had large maps awaiting our arrival so she could point us in the right direction for all our volcano adventures. She also presented us with a box of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, which were so yum they didn’t last the night!

Mahalo!

Kate's Volcano "Nohea" cottage was everything the website says it will be and more!
We spent two nights at the cottage and were wowed! The cottage is in a secluded setting in the rainforest, fantastic for those wanting luxury, peace and privacy.
Kathryn is an excellent host. She pops by when you arrive and gives you a tour of the many gadgets and facilities available in the cottage. She was also wonderful in terms of local knowledge telling us where to visit and was fully up-to-date on the recent volcanic activity. Any other questions Kathryn was happy to answer on the phone or pop by should you need her to.
The cottage has everything you could wish for, (way too much to explain all here). On top of the cottage facilities like a fully stocked kitchen, hot tub, large shower with body jets, tv/dvd/sound system etc. Kathryn has thought of lots of extras like: maps, torches, gloves etc for any volcano tour. Breakfast goodies like lovely speciality baked foods, fruit, milk & juice are provided.
The location is great. The nearby village has some restaurants, (we had some great pizzas). It is a short drive to the Volcano National Park entrance.
We had toured California and stayed in Honolulu before arriving here and Nohea certainly provided us with a luxurious stay towards the end of our holiday. It is very good value for money. I wholeheartedly recommend this to all, I'd give it a higher rating than excellent if I could!

Kate's Volcano Cottage

We stayed at Kate's Volcano Cottage for 5 nights in late June-early July 2007. It's a great place, and Kate couldn't have been more kind and thoughtful. Prior to and during our stay she provided us with much useful information, and was always highly personable and interested in our happiness. Lovely, thoughtfully appointed, well-kept little cottage and kitchen; beautiful, quiet setting with tree ferns and lovely anthurium flowers. Super laundry room. This was important, as we were traveling with two small children and had already spent a week on Oahu prior to our arrival. The laundry was free for guests to use and right there in an attached building, a not insignificant bonus considering the 3-nights-plus price of $100 per night. Kate left thoughtful notes and was really concerned about our enjoyment. She's right about the farmer's market -- get there early, and try the homemade liliko'i butter that one lady sells there. Words can't describe it's deliciousness. Also, by the way, the coffee beans that Kate supplies are better and fresher than any of the stuff we bought in Kona. Kate has high standards, and knows the best suppliers. She knows some great massage therapists, too! There is absolutely nothing that I wouldn't recommend about Kate's place. Staying there was a relaxing, good memory.

We stayed at Kahi Malu for two nights while we visited Volcanoes National Park. The house is very unique and is set in what is essentially a rainforest on a secluded road in Volcano Village, just a few minutes from the park entrance.

The house itself had everything we needed and could easily accomodate four people. Everything was very clean although a few things could use an upgrade (such as the shower/bathroom) as the very wet climate has taken a toll over the years. Fruit and sweet breads were left for us in the kitchen, which was great to have before we started each day.

Overall, I would say this is above average and the peace is especially nice after a long day of hiking in the park - replacing some of the aged portions of the house would move this property to an excellent.

“Kate's is the place!”

Kate's Volcano Cottage

Kate’s Cottage is a wonderful place to stay in Volcano. The surroundings are very peaceful and the cottage is quite cozy. Katherine the owner is such a sweet lady, she goes out of her way to help with sightseeing information and anything else that will make your stay as enjoyable as possible. She also has all the equipment (flashlights, rain jackets, maps) you require when venturing to Volcano National Park and for any hikes you plan on taking. The rainforest is breathtaking and can be enjoyed as you eat breakfast outside on the covered deck. We suggest you bring extra breakfast food if you are staying for more then one day as the supply she provides does not get replenished. Note that the general store in the area is quite expensive. We also agree that the shower could be updated. To be clear however we would definitely return to Kate’s if we ever head back to Volcano.

Because the hike to the flowing lava was very long when we were there Kate put us in contact with Mark Devita of LavaTours who is an experienced guide of the area. Mark was a great guide and we recommend using him when there.
