“Good B&B ideal for Volcanoes National Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

This place is buried deep in a heavily forested area but the streets are laid out in a grid plan so it is easy to find with the owners instructions. We stayed in the room to the left of the main entrance. It was clean, well furnished and had a very comfortable bed. Like everywhere we went on the Big Island, everything felt a little damp. The room had it's own parking spot. Breakfast was very nice and the owner, Joan, joined in the conversation without being too instrusive. We felt well looked after. Would stay here again.

Now I know it's in the jungle and secluded and all and I really wanted to love it, my girlfriend and I was really looking forward to the giant tub. But then there was the unwelcoming surprise to find large spiders in the tub and kitchen sink, and spider nests in all corners of the cottage. I'm not arachnophobic but it's unnerving to find so many, and especially in the tub and up in the bed loft. Had to wipe a bunch from the window sill right above the pillows on the bed, didn't find any in the bed thankfully. Joan, the owner, apologized and said that the cleaning girl had an emergency and couldn't make the 40 mile trip to the cottage that day to clean, okay, but someone should have gone in and cleaned. Afraid to open the cupboards for fear of what might crawl out.
If spiders don't bother you, then you will love it here.
The cottage is unique and quiet and private. Although a bit hard to find, don't try it after dark!
Has a wood burning fireplace, if you want to go there, and space heaters, it does get cold after dark.
Once I got over the spider thing, it was nice waking to the sounds of the birds in the trees.
Joan was friendly and welcoming and the breakfast was delicious.
And very close to the Volcano National Park

Room Tip: Don't try to find after dark!

We live in Hilo and wanted to spend a night somewhere special after a nice Valentine's dinner. We selected the King's Suite, which was everything the photo on her website was. Although this room is part of the main house, we had a separate entry. The room was quiet, private, spacious, clean, and had more than we needed. Joan is an exceptional hostess. The breakfast of fresh fruit, waffles topped with delicious berries, eggs, sausage and hot beverage was outstanding. She enjoys what she does...and it shows. M & D

I recently stayed at Pukeawe Cottage, of Joan's Country Goose B & B, with my sister's family. It was very cozy, well-appointed but not cluttered, very clean, with all the modern conveniences. The yard was beautifully landscaped, complete with wild pheasants roaming around. Joan is a fantastic hostess, made us all feel so welcome, and she served us a wonderful breakfast of waffles with whipped cream and berries, eggs, sausages, and great coffee. We will definitely stay there again!

We (young couple) stayed there for two nights during our vacation on Big Island. It is very close to the Volcano National Park. Joan is a really cute and lovely person who serves a wonderful breakfast every morning. You don`t need lunch after it. She bakes fresh waffles or pan cakes or muffins and serves also fresh fruits, coffee and tea. It was we best breakfast we had so far during our trip to Hawaii.

Hale Pukeawe (poo-kee-ah-weh). Very clean, pleasant, attractive cottage. Convenient to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Red-headed Kalij pheasants frequent the yard. Big, good breakfast provided.

113870 Ruby Avenue is the address of the Manager (Joan Earley). The cottage is several miles away, in Pukeawe Circle. Wi-fi.

There is no central heating but there are various wraps and wood-burning stove in the cottage, and electric blankets on the beds. Bring sweaters!

There are *no* streetlights in Volcano; if you don’t have GPS, make sure you have a flashlight (to see street signs and numbers!)

Beautiful, private, rain forest setting. Joan provided very clear directions to the cottage, as well as her main B&B location. A little rustic, but the floors, kitchen, and bath were clean. Plenty of fresh towels, reasonably equipped kitchen, bath amenities included shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hair dryer. Wood stove was great for our relaxing evenings after exploring the park and nearby area. Space heaters and rain on the roof made hanging out and sleeping very easy. We had breakfast at Joan's every morning, which was great, but we also could have easily prepared our own (closest full service grocery in Keaau, a few miles downhill toward Hilo). However, we ate in with take out one night, and made a simple dinner one night. We were about half way through a 2-week trip, so the washer/dryer was also a highlight of our stay. Warning: my wife was annoyed that the cottage also has a TV, which I admit I watched (a little).
