“Loved our stay here!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

We (our friends, my wife and me) stayed here a week ago. Initially we were very wary considering the bad reviews on TA. I agree that checking in late is a hassle especially with the owner leaving the keys in a grocery store. But after checking in, we really loved the place. We were put up in the Jade House Suites and had some difficulty finding the place, but once we did, we felt it was awesome. Not only was the location fantastic in terms of the proximity to the volcanos national park, but the room had almost all the facilities you would expect in a 3 star hotel except room service, which thankfully, we didnt really need. The room had facilities like a fridge, a mini fireplace, an iron, HD cable, a large flat screen TV, a full cooking range, a microwave and so on.
So if you are the kind who constantly needs room service for some or the other reason, then this place is not for you. But if you like to be on your own and love nature, then this cottage is definitely recommended.

Room Tip: Pick the Jade Suites.

We booked 2 rooms at the Lava Lodge and instantly regretted it. Upon our late check in, we had to go to the Thai Thai restaurant (which looked good, but we didn't eat here). We had to pay for the rooms up front, which I'm always a little wary of and in hind sight, I regret agreeing to pay upfront. My wife and I stayed in 'Wolfie 2' which was clean, but it was not worth the $79. The double bed was tiny, the walls are paper thin and there is a smell of mildew in the room. The shower worked and was OK, but it was just an odd place to stay. My inlaws had an equally nasty expeience.

Great location and the breakfast in the Lava Cafe over the road was great. I think I had 2 hours sleep and when I went to complain, the owner was nowhere to be seen. When I went to the Lava Cafe, they didn't even know of the Lava Lodge! That says a lot considering there are about 10 houses in this village!!!

Do yourself a favour and spend a few dollars extra and book into the Volcano Inn, situated just inside the Volcano National Park.

This place is about as close to camping as you can come, including spiders and the mold you might find no the inside of your tent... including the wet mildew funky smell. Hardly worth it if it were free. Do yourself and favor and stay somewhere else, that's clean and bug free.

Well, needless to say, this place isn't the Four Seasons. Hope they improve the conditions as it's such a beautiful area.

The less expenive rooms are available even during Marrie Monarch festival - if your lucky - not usually. everything is booked.
I always book the Jade Cottage or a room in the main house.

Where to begin? Have you ever gone camping? Then you have experienced better accommodations than this shack.

Let me start by saying we got the cheapest and ONLY room available on the windward side of the Big Island because it was Merrie Monarch week, so we didn't have high expectations.

That being said, for 2 people the "room" was barely big enough for our suitcases and us. We had to cram in along with the dehumidifier (the loudest one on the earth I think), the dorm style fridge and the portable electric heater. There's no TV or phone, so you are completely shut off from the civilized world and there's no way to call for help. The shower was no bigger than a phone booth, but at least we had running hot water.

We spent as little time actually in the room as possible, staying out until we were tired enough to fall asleep ASAP.

Our 2 days were capped off by a visit from a Hawaiian Lava Bug. At least that's what I told my wife it was when she saw it crawling in her suitcase. She admitted after we checked out that she knew it was a good ol' American cockroach, but was too tired at that point to freak out (see above), and that is why I married her, but I digress.

The Big Island is so beautiful that we still enjoyed ourselves, but more so after we left the Lava Lodge. So unless you are as desperate as we were or a masochist stay anyplace else.
