“We LOVED Kahi Malu!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2007

We stayed @ Kate's Kahi Malu for 2 very short nights (Oct 1-3). The cottage is beautiful, clean and comfortable! Kate is a very gracious & informative host. She provides practically everything that you can think of for your stay. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything. The scones and banana bread are delicious! Eggs, butter, juice, jelly, & milk are also provided. Plus there is cereals, granola, coffee, teas & hot chocolate mix.

The beds are really comfortable but they use jersey type sheets which I am not used to. There is a small fire place in the living room which I didn't think that we would need, but we did. It get really cold up there. There is also a heater in each room.

Yes, there are bugs. You are in the rainforest.. They usually fly in as you are coming in, so the trick is to try to not keep the door open too long.

The bathroom may need to be updated as mentioned by another poster. But it is clean & very well stocked as well. Again, being in the rain forest you can fell the softness of the floor due to the moisture. I actually had a wet bathing suit that I hung up on our first day, and it never got dry!

We were very happy with our stay and will definitely return if we visit Volcano again.

We spent 3 nights at the Bungalow. You can find more information at [--]. The owner, Kathryn, came over the first morning to give us information about the area. She has great maps of the area laminated for our use. This was a most wonderful place to stay. The place was immaculate. It is a recently remodeled place and was so quaint. The living area was fully equipped with TV, DVD, wireless internet, videos..anything you would want. There were just 2 of us and it was perfect. The bed was so very comfortable. The place has some beautiful antique pieces. The lanai was so comfortable. There is anything in the kitchen that you would need to prepare any type of meal. There are flashlights and umbrellas. It was perfect. This is the first review for this cottage, but you can look at the reviews of the other cottages owned by Volcano Places and you see that they are all very highly rated. Again, use Kathryn for information-we really enjoyed talking with her.

  • Liked — private, cozy, felt like being at home!

Spent two nights at Kate's "Kahi Malu" here and loved it – the cottage is fresh, clean, spacious and complete with all equipment to ensure the most comfortable stay. The master bedroom was huge, the bed pure relaxation, and the little fireplace a cosy accompaniment to our pre-dawn coffees, when the temperature was chilly.

Kathryn is a font of local knowledge, and had large maps awaiting our arrival so she could point us in the right direction for all our volcano adventures. She also presented us with a box of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, which were so yum they didn’t last the night!

Mahalo!

This is an exceptionally, beautifully constructed, perfectly located cottage with every detail thought out for the visitor. The cottage is located in a secluded forest in the town of Volcano. The cottage is minutes from Volcano National Park. Perfect for those who want to explore the Park or the nearby town of Hilo.

The host and hostesses have done an incredible job making the cabin and then putting every item in it that a visitor could want such as beautiful kitchen appliances and cookware, fresh pastries, native fruits, umbrellas, slippers, and foot massager. It contained everything we needed and nothing we didn't need.

Each room is built with 3 sides out into the rainforest, with gorgeous window views and a high sweeping roof to give the cottage a feeling of being in a luxurious treehouse. Even washing dishes in this cottage was a pleasure due to the view and lighting!

There was a delightful front and back patio and a large jacuzzi indoors. After a day of exploring, we could cook beautiful meals in a beautiful location, nestle in the wonderful reading nook, enjoy the video selection, or catch up with the world on the free wireless internet.

The hostess offered excellent advice for how to spend our time. Upon our first night arrival, she greeted us with local chocolates. How she knew we are chocolate fans, I'll never know!

I would recommend this cottage to couples or with families of one child. Our family loved it, and are hoping to make this an annual vacation location.

Kate's Volcano "Nohea" cottage was everything the website says it will be and more!
We spent two nights at the cottage and were wowed! The cottage is in a secluded setting in the rainforest, fantastic for those wanting luxury, peace and privacy.
Kathryn is an excellent host. She pops by when you arrive and gives you a tour of the many gadgets and facilities available in the cottage. She was also wonderful in terms of local knowledge telling us where to visit and was fully up-to-date on the recent volcanic activity. Any other questions Kathryn was happy to answer on the phone or pop by should you need her to.
The cottage has everything you could wish for, (way too much to explain all here). On top of the cottage facilities like a fully stocked kitchen, hot tub, large shower with body jets, tv/dvd/sound system etc. Kathryn has thought of lots of extras like: maps, torches, gloves etc for any volcano tour. Breakfast goodies like lovely speciality baked foods, fruit, milk & juice are provided.
The location is great. The nearby village has some restaurants, (we had some great pizzas). It is a short drive to the Volcano National Park entrance.
We had toured California and stayed in Honolulu before arriving here and Nohea certainly provided us with a luxurious stay towards the end of our holiday. It is very good value for money. I wholeheartedly recommend this to all, I'd give it a higher rating than excellent if I could!

We stayed at Kate's Volcano Cottage for 5 nights in late June-early July 2007. It's a great place, and Kate couldn't have been more kind and thoughtful. Prior to and during our stay she provided us with much useful information, and was always highly personable and interested in our happiness. Lovely, thoughtfully appointed, well-kept little cottage and kitchen; beautiful, quiet setting with tree ferns and lovely anthurium flowers. Super laundry room. This was important, as we were traveling with two small children and had already spent a week on Oahu prior to our arrival. The laundry was free for guests to use and right there in an attached building, a not insignificant bonus considering the 3-nights-plus price of $100 per night. Kate left thoughtful notes and was really concerned about our enjoyment. She's right about the farmer's market -- get there early, and try the homemade liliko'i butter that one lady sells there. Words can't describe it's deliciousness. Also, by the way, the coffee beans that Kate supplies are better and fresher than any of the stuff we bought in Kona. Kate has high standards, and knows the best suppliers. She knows some great massage therapists, too! There is absolutely nothing that I wouldn't recommend about Kate's place. Staying there was a relaxing, good memory.

We stayed at Kahi Malu for two nights while we visited Volcanoes National Park. The house is very unique and is set in what is essentially a rainforest on a secluded road in Volcano Village, just a few minutes from the park entrance.

The house itself had everything we needed and could easily accomodate four people. Everything was very clean although a few things could use an upgrade (such as the shower/bathroom) as the very wet climate has taken a toll over the years. Fruit and sweet breads were left for us in the kitchen, which was great to have before we started each day.

Overall, I would say this is above average and the peace is especially nice after a long day of hiking in the park - replacing some of the aged portions of the house would move this property to an excellent.
