“Wonderful place to stay near Volcano”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

My husband and I recently stayed in Cottage 44 for a few nights of our honeymoon and had a great time. The cottages are located extremely close to Volcanoes National Park, probably as close as you can get. If you are interested in spending time at the park and are looking for quiet and privacy, this is the place for you. First thing you notice is the beautiful grounds of the cottages. Green everywhere. Cottage 44, specifically, is lovely. It's perfect for a couple. The fireplace is fantastic and provides great ambience as well as much needed heat on those cool nights. The jacuzzi tub is another great feature of the cottage. You will receive fresh baked bread, fruit and juice every afternoon for breakfast the next morning which is another great touch. The cottage has a small refrigerator and some kitchen dishes and utensils, which is nice to store some food, as restaurants are scarce. Hilo is not too far, and you can find plenty of stores and restaurants there. I also recommend driving to Hilo as it's a really nice little town on the water. But don't stop at Hilo, keep driving north through the rain forest, it's beautiful.

Hale Ohia is extremely convenient for anyone interested in spending some time at the park. It's also just a cute, quiet and relaxing place to get away from it all. My husband and I are already planning our next trip to the Big Island and Hale Ohia will be where we stay, no doubt!

We stayed in Cottage #44 and had a lovely stay. The cottage had a little sitting area and a separate bedroom. The bed was very comfortable and the electric fire place kept the cottage warm and cozy. They brought us fresh fruit and a homemade sweet bread each morning. We were close to Volcano Village and about a mile from Volcano National Park. The manager was very welcoming and helpful. The grounds of the property were well kept and beautiful. It was a lovely and relaxing place to stay.

We Stayed in the Dillingham. It is a well equipped, two room suite with private bath. It is not as private as it seems since the walls are very thin so we heard our neighbors getting dressed and chatting. There is NO heat. Only a tiny little ice tray that wasn't even half full. Was told that was all there was - no ice in the kitchen. Had to go out and buy a bag of ice. There were not enough plates to share the loaf of bread(pretty good) offered for breakfast. Also there was some very good fruit. Eating breakfast would have been more enjoyable if there had been two plates and several small chairs to pull up to the table. It was too cold to be outside .

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights in mid-January 2013. It was a last-minute reservation, and only the Dillingham Suite in the back of the main house was available. We might have preferred one of the cottages for better quiet and privacy, but this suite was perfectly comfortable except for a bit of noise from the occupants of the adjacent room (Master Bedroom). I echo all the wonderful comments about the charming grounds, the delicious breakfast, and the close proximity to the Volcanoes park entrance. I loved breakfasting out on our lanai while listening to the birds, and appreciated that our host, Michael, was helpful but inobtrusive. Unfortunately, Dixon the cat has passed on, so we didn't get to meet him.

I do wish that we'd stocked up a bit more on groceries in Hilo before our visit -- the food options in Volcano are rather limited, particularly if you don't want to eat out!

I lowered my rating a tiny bit because of the noise from the adjacent room, but it really should be more like 4.5. Hale Ohia is definitely on my list of places to revisit on a future trip.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main house get a bit of noise from each other, and also from the registration area and...

The pictures I found online for Hale Ohia looked good, but we all know that sometimes it's a matter of perspective. For this property, however, what you see and what you get, and it's lovely. We stayed at the Dillingham Suite, and while we were a little surprised that there was no door to the shower area (just a shower curtain, but there is one for the toilet), this was not a big issue for us. The grounds were well-maintained and the service was excellent. The place was serene, clean and tidy, and very conveniently located to the Volcano Park and nearby restaurants. Highly recommended!

Found this wonderful place on-line. It was truly a gem, the grounds are so beautiful and well kept...a few little cottages in a forest-like setting was truly like being in a fairytale storybook. We stayed at the Iiwi Suite for one-night and wished we could have stayed longer. It was a quaint and very clean place, so nice to have a Christmas wreath right outside our door. I loved looking out of the windows and strolling around the entire area which was so lush with greenery and nice lawn chairs to sit in. You could hear birds chirping and the air was so cool. Breakfast was good - papayas with starfruit,k bananas, banana bread, coffee and juice. We would definitely come back here to stay. It was so pretty and such a short distance to Volcano National Park. Absolutely loved staying here!!!

Room Tip: The Iiwi room is just right for two people.

We stayed in the Ilihani cottage and it surpassed our expectations. Everything you need is available and the design and decor are very comfortable. The location is perfect, very close to amenities and HVNP. Michael is friendly and cares about your stay - his homemade breads and fresh fruits every morning are a wonderful personal touch. Mahalo Michael!
