“A little slice of heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

This was our first stay in a B&B, anywhere in the world, and if all B&Bs are run like Laura and Garvin run Island Goode’s then we will be staying in a lot more in our future travels. Island Goode’s is an easy 10min drive from Hilo airport just off Highway 19. We stayed for 3 nights in the Hilo Bay Room, the room was beautifully decorated, had air-con (as all rooms do) and two fans if the air-con became too cool. The bathroom was very large and well appointed as the room. There was a beautiful recliner in the room that was nearly as comfortable as the bed…..LMAO. The bed in our room allowed you to set electronically the softness level that you desired, and that was for either side of the bed. Never slept in a bed that could do this, so it was pretty cool, AND very comfortable. The room also had a small fridge and tea and coffee making facilities, large screen TV, small dining table and heaps and heaps of cupboard and storage space. There is also free wi-fi!!

Breakfast could be served in your room or on the lanai, and as others have mentioned the breakfast was amazing and delicious and a perfect start to the day. We always had it served on the lanai as our lanai looked out to Hilo Bay, amazing views. Each room also had access to a hammock if you wanted to sway the day away, sadly we had a busy schedule so couldn’t avail ourselves to this luxury.

Island Goode's is in the perfect location to explore the eastern side of the island along with the southern side which includes the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and also the central part like Mauna Kea. The coastal drive north along Hwy 19 is amazing and takes you through some beautiful rainforests. If that doesn’t suit, being 7 mins from Hilo allows you easy access to dinning and shopping. If you don't mind driving it is an easy 2 hour drive to Kona, we did it and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery driving through the middle of the island on Hwy 200.

What can you say about Laura and Garvin that hasn’t been already said, they are magnificent hosts and have a great understanding of Hawai’i. They are always happy to have a chat and help where required, and also mindful if you want your own space. They are a long way on the path to make their B&B self sustainable and environmentally friendly, which was a big plus for us. Island Goode’s is a little slice of heaven on the Big Island. Would definitely stay again and would recommend to our friends and family. Thanks Laura and Garvin for a wonderful stay and it was a pleasure to meet some of your lovely family.

The Island Goodes were so wonderfully helpful and accommodating. The breakfasts were large and delicious. Laura accommodated our dietary restrictions with ease and grace, and delighted in showing us new island fruits. Gavin was so laid back and kind when our delayed flight put us in late at night. The rooms were clean, lovely and had many thoughtful conveniences. The extra room was perfect for our two daughters (11 and 13). This is a great place to be on the Hilo side. After looking around at other options once we were there, we were really glad we'd chosen Island Goode.

Thank you so much for your hospitality! This inviting, comfortable and spacious B&B is everything anyone could ever ask for. We appreciate you accommodating us on such short notice and rescuing us from our original plans.

The breakfasts were delicious. The local fresh eggs, corn omelette, baked goods and fruits were tasty and will be missed. There are definitely no passion fruits or homemade granola with coconut yogurt back home! Both rooms we stayed in were spacious and cared for. The grounds were clean, private and serene. After a long day of trails, excursions and being in the sun and rain for 8 hours, coming back “home” was such a treat.

We’ll always appreciate the morning conversations we had and the suggestions you provided us. You made our first B&B stay memorable. Hawaii is often referred to as paradise and your fabulous establishment definitely contributed to that! Thank you for making part of our 1st Anniversary – and our 1st trip to Hawaii – even more memorable than we imagined.

Room Tip: The smallest room is still more than enough space for a couple or small family.

We spent our first four nights on Hawaii at Island Goodes. Despite our late arrival, Garvin took the time to show us everything we needed to know, with Laura taking over when it came to providing breakfast the following morning. We found it a great base for exploring the Eastern side of the Island, with everything we wanted to see and do within no more than an hour's drive. It was great to be able to cook our own dinners using the kitchenette and BBQ, and we could always look forward to a sumptuous breakfast each morning provided by Laura. It was interesting to learn from Laura and Garvin about life on the Island, and I appreciated Garvin taking time out from his busy schedule to make sure I was driving our hire car properly (being British, I find that I am not immediately competent to drive a car without a stick gear shift). Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful time at Island Goode's. I felt I was back in my homeland (Colombia, South America) with all the tropical landscape, lush vegetation, panoramic views, beautiful sunsets, and specially the hospitality and excellent service. We stayed at the Ginger Room, very spacious, clean and with all amenities. Breakfasts were spectacular, with all that fresh tropical fruit, pancakes, eggs, excellent coffee, and the view compared to paradise. We will be back.
Aloha and Mahalo.

We chose this place because of its excellent trip advisor rating. We were concerned about low ratings for many other HIlo properties, so we were glad this property had vacancy for a night.

The property was great. We loved Garvin's warm hospitality throughout. Laura was very helpful in making great suggestions of what to see and what was not so impressive in Hilo.

We stayed in the corner room. This couple knows how to run a B&B very, very well (they have excellent business experience from Southern CA). The whole way they run the operation is just impressive.

Also, the beds, which Laura has an expertise with, were so comfortable - slept like a rock. She explained the lengths she has gone to ensure guests enjoy a great sleep experience and it was definitely evident.

What really wow'd us was the amazing breakfast - we are vegetarian, so they provided a beautiful fruit presentation (with a unique fruit called "Polson (sp?)" that Garvin explained, with delicious pancakes. That breakfast was so grand, it left me wishing we had stayed one more night.

Garvin was nice enough to allow us to use beach towels for the day despite our checking out since we were doing waterfall and scenic drive nearby. This property is located on a hill where you can see the ocean and in VERY close proximity to what is a killer botanical garden that is a must see and within a few miles from Akaka Falls and other.

The recent review from Texas took every word I had to say.
This is the first B&B I or my family had ever stayed in and man Laura set the bar high. We stayed in 3 other B&B's while on the Big Island but there was just something about Island Goode's.
Stars, circles and checkmarks just don't do justice.

We also wound up at Island Goode's by chance on a referral from another B&B that was booked.
After the first night I thought about that and was so glad the other B&B was unavailable, and we couldn't have been happier with our experience.

Garvin and Laura were excellent hosts and worked very hard to make our stay perfect. Garvin met us as we parked the car and got us to our room which was also the Mauna Kea room. He was well prepared for a family that had never been to Hawaii. They are making some additions to the property, so we didn't see Garvin too much, but when we did, all smiles and always offering to help and make sure all was ok. Laura is always busy in the kitchen, around the "house" or yard, but always graciously makes herself there for you, even if it is for general conversation. They were happy to answer our questions about the island and their home and farm, even tips on how to pick ripe fruit and how to peel it for when we no longer had her around to do it for us.

The room was awesome. Very family friendly. Kind size bed for mom and dad, a separate bedroom for the 2 girls. There was a nice living area with dining table and some appliances like fridge, microwave, coffee maker ect. Best thing to me was we didn't have to use the AC. If we left the room open in the day with fans on, by the time we were ready for bed, the evening weather was cool enough to leave the windows open and have a natures song put us to sleep. Garvin and Laura also supplied in the room plenty of towels, bath and beach, and there were also some games for kids or families.

Breakfast was set up for us every morning, and it was a spread! (pics) Everything tasted lovely and fresh. Lots if fresh fruit, always some protein, and a filler like pancakes or scones....and for a super treat, Laura makes her own yogurt with topping, eat one and she will bring another and it can be another flavor. Big plus for us, the mornings no one was in the bay room, they would let us sit at the table overlooking the bay, beautiful.

We wondered the property daily, finding something new every time. Just outside the door is a hammock and swing and large table. (each room has one...you don't have to share) Past that is where the exploring begins; banana trees, coconut trees, palms, flowering, lava wall, baby pineapples, animals and on and on. There is also a hot tub up in the corner of the back yard , nicely covered.

If you are planing on staying around Hilo, not too far from Waimea, or just not sure, think no more...this is the place. You definitely wont run out of things to do, close by or day trip it.

Room Tip: Mauna Kea is best for families or friends traveling together....could hold 7. Any room is great thou...
