“Great tour - don't be a wuss :-)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013 via mobile

Excellent experience. Very friendly and competent captain and assistant. Ignore the review from Mr. OMG-it's-so-rough below. It's the open ocean; thar be big waves thar! Yeah, if you're prone to motion-sickness, you'll have trouble unaided. Be smart, take some Dramamine ahead of time and you'll have a wonderful time. I'm very susceptible to being seasick and we went on a day with 5-7 ft seas; I was fine and got front row seats to Madame Pele's artistry.

“simply amazing trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

We were fortunate enough to do this trip recently & what an experience it was.
Captain Gene & his offsider were great,we both felt very safe with the 2 of them in charge of this small boat.
We had the best trip possible & are so very glad we selected this boat.
The flowing lava was amazing & this trip is definitely a must do while in the area.
Thank you both for an amazing experience.Well done

“Capt. Gene's Lava Encounter”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Captain Gene runs a thoughtful, comfortable, lengthy, and unforgettable tour to view the lava flowing into the ocean of the Puna coast. The ship left promptly at 5pm and the ride out to the lava was fast and fun, with spectacular views of the jungle, black cliff,s and black sand beaches along the coast. Comfortable, well-padded seats (securely bolted down to the boat) made the ride through this choppy water an adventure, not a trial. The weak-of-stomach should consider dramamine, however! Once we arrived, the good captain gave us over 45 minutes of viewing and videoing, circling back repeatedly and exploring several different inflow sites. We were only about 40-50 ft away from the lava! The wall of heat, the floating and sizzling chunks of lava, the hot-tub feel of the ocean water, and of course the spectacular molten display make this an experience not to be missed!

“Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

Captain Gene's lava boat was a fabulous experience for our family of eight. First, Captain Gene called and advised us when the weather might be unsuitable for a good experience, and he worked to make sure we could reschedule before our stay on Hawaii was over. His flexibility and consideration made for outstanding customer service. The boat was in fine shape, and the seating was comfortable. Captain Gene and his safety guide checked numerous times on passenger welfare. They made a special effort to allow the youngest passenger (6 years old) to have a fun trip, and they answered his questions patiently. The first mate/safety guide gave us a little guided tour on the way out, and Captain Gene took the boat to two different lava flows and got as close as we wanted, so that we saw the lava, felt the heat, and heard the sizzle and pop as the hot lava hit the water. They stayed as long as we wanted (within reason) and asked us which flow we wanted to see more of and when we were ready to go back. The seas got a little rougher than expected on the trip back, but the excellent skill of Captain Gene and his "first mate" kept us safe, and they did a masterful job of avoiding or steering through the roughest waves. There are several lava boat tours to choose from, and I highly recommend Captain Gene!

“Best lava boat tour EVER!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

This trip was such a great experience. Captain Gene is a friendly knowledgeable seaman. He has lots of experience being on the water and I felt safe the entire time. (Even though I shouldn't have. The boat is small and only held 7 passengers. The seats were comfortable. The trip out along the coast pre-sunset was thrilling and astoundingly beautiful. We were even treated to a full double rainbow over the ocean. His first mate was eager to give out information about the coastline and the lava history as we cruised towards the ocean entry. You could see billowing clouds of steam as we went towards the lava. Then, with the small craft, we were able to get REALLY close to molten cascades spilling, dripping and pouring into the roiling water. It sizzled and popped and steamed and even exploded a little. There were smoking, floating rocks drifting around the boat! Awesome! We stayed out longer than the other tour boats and Gene was very accommodating, taking us to 2 separate flows and allowing us ample time to get all the pictures that we wanted. It is hard to describe in words the in your face nature experience that we received. Absolutely astounding. I would recommend this tour to anyone seeking adventure. We definitely got our money's worth. Great
great great!
