“Novelty of eating at the southern most restaurant and bar”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

The real reason I stopped was just for the novelty of eating at the southern most restaurant and bar in US (not including territories). It really is more like a sports bar than a restaurant, but worth the visit to say you did it...and buy a t-shirt :).

“Good lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

We were driving around the island when we realised we were hungry and hadn't seen anywhere to eat for quite some time, so we stopped here. Given that it has little in the way of competition for miles around, we wondered if we would find high prices and poor food, but this was definitely not the case. I was also concerned that there would be no vegetarian options, but there was a garden burger on the menu, and the server said it would be no problem to make up a salad if I wanted. The food we ordered was tasty and very good value, plus the bar has the quirky attraction of being the most southern one in the US.

“Yuck!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

After reading these reviews we decided to try this place. As we were in Naalehu a few weeks earlier and passed it up for another restaurant in town we thought we’d try it on this trip. We were there for lunch, we ordered a grilled chicken sandwich basket and a mushroom and onion burger. Both sandwiches were tasty with lettuce, tomatoes and onion, served on a plain roll. Nothing really special! Now the good part, not!

This place needs a serious renovation! During our meal we both spent way too much time swatting flies. Yes I know, most place in Hawaii don’t have windows but this place got a special order of flies! Now the worst thing was the Men’s Restroom. Both restrooms are located outside on the restaurant, woman on the side of the building and the men’s room at the back of the building. The toilet was filthy on the outside, it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in sometime. The sink only had a cold water fixture and heavily corroded, the hot was missing entirely so no hot water. The soap holder was disgusting with corrosion buildup. This could be replaced for a few bucks! Of course, no soap in it. Finally the door handle (level type) was broken in half! With facilities like this I can only wonder what’s happening where my meal was just prepared!

Needless to say I’m not going to take a chance on returning here! Good luck.

“Native Hawaiian Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

We were traveling from South Point and Green Sand Beach to Black Sand Beach and stopped at this local restaurant. We asked some of the locals on the street where we should eat and Shaka was one of the restaurants.
The restaurant was filled with locals at the bar and the restaurant was noisy. We ordered two of the true authentic Hawaiian dishes. Not Polynesian food but true Hawaiian food. Both dishes were good.
