This free, little city beach can be crowded and not-so-peaceful out of the water. But in the water, it is a wonderland of sea creatures! So many colorful fish everywhere and if you are lucky, you will see green sea turtles. The turtles come right up into the shallow areas of the beach where you can observe them. There are "turtle watchers" who stand nearby to keep you from getting too close for the protection of the turtles. There is a little bit of sand and some shade, but this is mostly on a large lava flow, so you are getting into the water either right off of the rock or through a narrow sandy channel. We watched people of all ages enjoying the snorkeling and swimming in this protected area. To the right of the snorkeling area, they have surfing lessons. My granddaughter surfed for the very first time and did great. The conditions are ideal for learning the sport here.
