“Nice B&B, not a convenient location”

The house is really beautiful, and pretty close to the ocean.

Pros:
-price
-breakfast was definitely good
-location by the beach

Cons:
-As of December 2007, there was a MASSIVE HOLE in the front lawn where they were building a pool. I was extremely disappointed that the owners did not mention this when I booked the hotel, nor did they ever acknowledge that it might have been less than ideal for me. The gaping hole is directly below the lanai, where you eat breakfast every morning. Definitely ask if the gaping hole still exists, and ask for a discount if there is construction on the front lawn.
-definitely felt more like I was staying at a friends' house than a hotel or b&b
-location not particularly close to any towns with great options for dinner, bars, etc. (Pahoa is close, but did not have a lot going on)

    • Disliked — That I was not warned about the pool construction on the front lawn

“First time at a B&B”

Our first time staying at the Bed & Breakfast and after staying at the Ala Kai, we would seriously consider staying at a B&B again. And I would recommend those traveling around the Hilo/Volcanoe area to try this place out.

The owners are really friendly, they'll give you local advice on what to do, where to go, what roads to travel on, local culture, etc. There's more personal interaction like staying at a friend's house instead of a staying in a cheesy hotel (for the same price in this area). The room and the bathroom are very clean. And they provide free wi-fi internet. You might get better rates if you make reservations directly for this place. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

We definitely loooooved our stay in Ala Kai. The name "Ala Kai" means "by the ocean" and it can't fit the place any better. You are literally facing the ocean when you sit on the lanai. The place is new and clean. We also loved the breakfast. One of the owners Pat cooks great casserole dishes. The sweet bread custard is one of the best that I had. If you love the peace and tranquility of the big island, you should go there.

“This was beyond anything we expected. We did not want to leave.”

Every once in a while you are truly pleased overall with a place you find to go on vacation. We have stayed in Oahu, Kauai, Kona and in Hilo on previous trips to Hawaii. Until this trip we never stayed and experienced Hawaii as it was meant to be. We stayed in the guest house behind a bed and breakfast. This is a totally independent free standing 2 bedroom cottage. There is a large kitchen and den area along with the 2 bedrooms and full bathroom facility. The entire cottage was beautiful and clean. Outside there is a full lanai (porch) where you can enjoy the peace and quiet. The only thing we heard were birds, the ocean, and the wind in the trees. No jets, no sirens, no loud music, nothing else. This is what Hawaii is supposed to be like. Every morning a lavish breakfast is served and every morning it is different: breads, fresh island fruits, Kona coffee, fruit juice. Your hosts Pat and Mary are a wealth of information about island attractions, traditions, roads, etc. They provide many things that you may need for your visit such as ice chests, swimming floats, guide books, etc. I could go on and on about this place because we want to go back already. You are located less than an hour from Hilo, Volcano National Park, a lava flow that glows in the night, a tidal pool where you can swim in naturally heated waters along with small tropical fish, and other attractions too numerous to mention. The accomodations, food, hosts, local attractions were all excellent. The price was incredible too.
