“Kids loved the swimming pool”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2009

Our family loved staying at Art & Orchids (ages 11,13). We felt very at home, the hosts are super relaxed and gracious, and the place just invites you to slow down and enjoy. We loved the Kapoho tide pools and heated ocean pools. The tropical vegetation is unbelievable. The art and orchids are truly inspiring.

we picked this place because it's close to the county lava viewing area (about 20min drive), the Volcanoes National Park (about 30min) and Hilo (about 15min). Puna, the surrounding area, has interesting places to explore such as the volcanically-heated pond. the location is a bit obscure but we got very easy-to-follow directions.

we had two wonderful nights here and experienced the warm hospitality of our hosts. the hosts were very informative and helpful. they contacted the authority to check on the closure of a trail (due to volcano activity.) breakfast was amazing! and services were lightning fast (like our laundry was returned while we had our breakfast!)

the common area have a kitchen and we bought food from a grocery store nearby and cooked there. other amenities include a DVD library and a recently-completed pool that we didn't have time to enjoy. the hosts were very thoughtful and let guests borrow torches (for lava viewing) and snorkeling gear.

the frogs were loud at night which i actually enjoyed, just like sleeping in a rain forest. the ground was beautifully landscaped with roaming chickens. quite a unique setting. we should have stayed longer. two days were too short to see the national park and all the hightlights in the area. but as always, a trip that feels short is a good trip.

We decided to split our stay on the big island between both sides of the island. Because we wanted to maximize our time at the volcano we decided to spend two nights in Hilo. While searching for lodging we came across the Art and Orchid B&B. Located in Keaau, the Art and Orchid B&B is the perfect starting point for visiting the volcano and surrounding area. After getting us settled into our room and a tour of the B&B, Markie recommended a couple of restaurants (had copies of menus) and told us about some local events that were going on. We stayed in the Orchid room and couldn't have been happier. They have DVD players in the rooms w/ a library of DVD's in the common area to choose from. No AC, but the 3 windows (2 bedroom and 1 bathroom) along with the ceiling fan kept it cool. Breakfast is buffet style and satisfying. We had eggs, bacon, toast, homemade granola, breads, and fresh fruit every day. Suntan lotion, bug repellent, guide books, flash lights, beach towels, snorkel equipment, coolers, are just a few of the items that they have for guests to use during their visit.

  • Liked — location, friendly/helpful owners
  • Disliked — No pool, but in process of putting one in

This is a fantastic B&B with very warm hosts who welcome you and are willing to answer questions and make suggestions if asked. Our flight arrived long after check-in and Markie made sure we were settled and knew where everything was located. They serve a great breakfast and the entire place is spotless -- a major plus if you have allergies! We stayed in the Orchid room, it is the smallest room but spacious enough for two, the bathroom is a bit small, but not a problem. We esp. liked not being able to hear the other guests when in our room -- not always something you can count on. The shared guest kitchen and living space is large and welcoming and eating each morning on the enclosed porch while chatting with the other guests and the hosts is a wonderful way to start the day. The location is very convenient, just a few miles outside of Hilo. We were really sad when we moved to the other side of the island, but the distances really do dictate that necessity. We hope to return someday and can't imagine staying anywhere else!

A wonderful experience. It was almost hard to leave to go out sightseeing each day; it was so peaceful and just a wonderful place to hang out. It is set in a lush jungle setting -- a little off the beaten path, but well worth it. Markie is the hostess with the mostest -- genuinely warm and welcoming, and very informative. We felt very much at home. Also very clean. I almost don't want to add another glowing review because I'd like to keep this place a secret.

  • Liked — The friendliness of the hostess
  • Disliked — The door between our room & the common room a gap at the top -- didn't feel completely private. A completely solid door with no gaps would be nice, especially for folks there for romantic purposes!

We spent five days of our honeymoon at Art and Orchids and enjoyed every minute of it. The property is back off the main road a few miles and in the middle of lush forest so that all we heard at night was the singing of tree frogs. Our room (the garden room) was large, well thought out, with unique furniture and original mosaics by Markie, one of the owners. Markie and Jerry provided many thoughtful amenities, several of which would be very helpful for families (babysitting, art classes, snorkeling gear, DVDs, games, and soon to be a pool). Also, they were very helpful with recommendations for things to do, upcoming concerts, restaurants, and generally taking in the area. Breakfast was on the screened lanai and included several kinds of tropical fruit grown on the premises, eggs from their chickens, ham or Portuguese sausage, and an assortment of breads (like banana bread with homegrown bananas). While we liked everything the fruit was really amazing, being so fresh. We spent a lot of time talking with Markie during breakfast which we both really enjoyed since she has a great deal of stories and is in general a fun and interesting person. It was also nice to have her there while we planned what we we going to do that day. In general it felt like we were visiting fun relatives who happen to be great hosts and live in a beautiful house surrounded by rain forest. When we come back to Hawai'i we will definitely be staying here.
