A group of us spent 5 days at the Mauna Kea to attend a friend's wedding, which was being held at the hotel (incredible - on a cliffside tee overlooking the ocean). I was frankly a little worried about the hotel based on some of the mixed reviews seen here. However, our experience from the moment of our arrival was a very pleasant one. As noted by some of the reviews, the resort is a little dated, but that is precisely what charmed us about it - very old school, simple elegance, laid back - loved the art and clean lines. The hotel really sets itself apart from the dime-a-dozen, marble filled mega hotels. The service is incredible - I agree with another reviewer that the twice a day room servicing is very welcome after a day at the beach. Free bottles of water? Unheard of - and our ice bucket was always full. Beach is beautiful with very easy access. Great bay for swimming/snorkeling/kids. We saw a lot of turtles during our stay (and the manta rays, of course).
Would suggest renting a car and driving around the island - we drove north from the hotel to Hilo and spent time hiking to waterfalls, exploring cute little towns and enjoying the incredible views. We wanted to see the volcanic activity but were told that the roads have been closed and there was really nothing to see (in terms of lava flow) unless you were in a helicopter.
Recommend drinks at the Resident's Bar at the Four Seasons (about 20 mins south of hotel). During the day it is open to the public and is well worth the trip. They are famous for their giant mai tai, and the location is great.
Also, we had dinner at the Fairmont Orchid at their restaurnant on the water (cannot recall the name). Great place for a sunset dinner.
Mexican restaurant (Tres Hombres) just north of the hotel was also pretty good.
