We just returned from five wonderful nights at the Mauna Lani Terrace, in unit H303 rented from Dave and Sandy. We are originally from the Big Island and have stayed in virtually every luxury hotel on the Kohala/Kona coast. The Mauna Lani is our favorite, and this condo lived up to all our expectations. It is a top floor end unit with a really gorgeous view of ancient Hawaiian fishponds and the ocean beyond. We would recommend this unit, particularly for families with little kids like us.
The unit is well kept, and the layout was perfect - we were able to put our pack-n-play in the half bath for our baby, giving him complete privacy for his naps. And not only is there a kitchen and washer/dryer, the unit is right next to the (mostly unused) pool area, which includes a separate second pool made for little kids. (note: we have a preschooler and a baby; while not particularly dangerous, the unit is not childproofed, so those with crawlers/early walkers would need to be careful). My daughter could not get enough of it! The view is nothing less than spectacular - the lanai is far wider than those at the hotel, and the overlook is just wonderful. The Mauna Lani has (to me) the nicest oceanfront grounds, with a particular reliance on plants indigeneous to the state, and this condo shows these grounds off very well. I loved nursing my little guy while watching the fish jump in the ponds in front of us.
Also, as avid snorkelers and scuba divers, we enjoyed the proximity the condo enjoys to the condo beach, which is one of the best snorkeling/dive spots on the island. The reef is very healthy and just gorgeous. It is much more convenient than the hotel, particularly when you're dragging all of your snorkeling gear.
We have many friends with kids who prefer the Four Seasons. If you like to chill by the pool in the lap of luxury (with your kids happiliy occupied elsewhere), that's the place to go. If you are a good swimmer, and want to play with schools of fish and turtles over eye-popping coral, or you want to get a more authentic awareness of Hawaii's environment and culture, go to the Mauna Lani.
