We recently stayed 3 nights at the Fairmont Orchid in early May 2008, the resort is currently one of the nicest options in the South Kohala coast resort areas relative to the other options (Four Seasons - too expensive, Hapuna Prince - rundown, Mauna Kea - closed, nicer grounds than Mauna Lani Bay, much nicer than any of the Waikoloa properties).
The room's at the Fairmont were nice, we were in a Partial Oceanview room, and that was a fair description of the room, you could get a nice view from the furniture on the patio. I would probably best describe the room itself as a nice business hotel room, but the bathroom was definitely much nicer than a typical business hotel room with a separate shower and tub and 2 sinks at the vanity.
They do charge resort fees, but these are a one time charge, so if you're staying for an extended period of time, they can be a good value. They also charge for internet, but since we were there on vacation, this wasn't a problem, but definitely would have been if I was there for a conference / work event. The beach, while manmade, is a very nice place to spend an afternoon, and is built in a way that creates a very nice / calm lagoon. The grounds are beatiful, and add greatly to the experience of staying at the property.
There are several restaurant options on site, and while definitely not a great value, they are not unfairly priced for "resort" restaurants. Brown's Beach House in particular, was definitely one of the best meals we had on our trip, and has beatiful views of the sunset. I would recommend dinner reservations of around 6:30PM to fully experience the sunset.

Aloha and thank you for making the time to share your recent vacation experience with other travelers.
I wanted to correct a misconception -- we do not charge resort fees unless you're referring to the optional Activities Passes which are a one-time fee valid for unlimited usage of beach and pool equipment, fitness classes and activities and more for your entire stay. That's regardless of whether you stay 2 nights or 20.
There are two options: Fun & Sun $65 adults/$50 ages 5-12 for surfboards, 1- and 2-person kayaks, personal floats, masks, fins, snorkel, CD player, lending books, scoop nets and board games. The Paradise Within Pass is $80 per person and entitles you to limitless daily classes including yoga, aqua fitness, stress buster, Life in Balance, Core Strength Conditioning, Watercolor class, exercise mats and much more designed to provide a toolbox of skills for life.
Also, internet usage is free to guests who join our complimentary Fairmont President's Club program which can easily be done online in advance of your stay. There are also many complimentary 'hot spots' on the hotel grounds with easy access in addition to guestrooms, Business Center and three private internet kiosks located near the conference facilities.
Thank you for your recommendation and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon to our Big Island Paradise. Aloha.
