My husband and I stayed here during a three-island trip to Hawaii in July 2006. We loved the Big Island and spent four days here and wished it were longer. The B&B is away from the hustle & bustle but not too far; halfway up the side of a volcano on a coffee plantation--Lonn grows his own and serves and sells coffee that is out of this world. We appreciated Lonn's suggestions about things to do and avoid (especially on snorkeling--some of the best was right off the pier in town!). He is the perfect host--available but not intrusive. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

After reading all the other 5 star reviews I decided to book the place myself, even though I'm a natural cheapskate and hate spending $$. I'm glad I did and so will you.

Everything posted was true and Lon was a good host. Helpful, but never in your face. The rooms are spacious and well furnished. The drive down into town only took about 10 minutes and judging by its business, I'm glad we stayed away from the large crowds. My only complaint is Kona's getting too busy. But once nice benefit of the 'city' was gas at the Costco. A good 30 cents less.

While Kona's a bit hectic for our taste -- way more development than we normally enjoy -- we found our week with Lonn to be exactly the respite we'd hoped to find on that otherwise busy island.

As others report, the hospitality is unparalleled, the breakfasts unforgettable, and the quarters comfortable, spacious, nicely decorated, and well equipped with a mini-fridge and whirlpool tub (plus separate shower, big enough for two!).

The wireless network is steady, reliable; the view, unsurpassed. Best of all, however, is the location, high in the hills at 1500 feet or so. Nights are cool, breezy -- perfect sleeping weather -- and the design of the two suites allow for cross-ventilation that makes the daytimes comfortable (something we don't always find in B&Bs, and certainly never in budget motels). A long, shaded deck separates the two suites, providing all the privacy one might desire.

We can't say enough good things about Lonn's hospitality; the ambiance is casual, relaxed, yet conscientious and thoughtful. The space is, of course, immaculate.

Did we mention that our host grows and picks his own coffee, which he serves to guests?

We'll be back -- ideally, with good friends who'll rent the other suite. As far as we're concerned, this is the best B&B we've ever visited, and we've visited many.

This is the best bed and breakfast experience we have ever had! We returned this year after staying here for our honeymoon a year ago and will definitely go back again in the future. We love the rooms. Lonn has two suites built on to his house so you have your own enterance into an adorable room. There is a living space, a kitchenette, a balcony with a gorgeous view of the Kona coastline, a large spacious bedroom w/ a king size bed, & big bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. Lonn is a great host and friend. He's an amazing cook. The breakfast is always creative and delicous and served with his very own and very tasty Kona coffee. He's full of interesting stories and great recommendations for things to do and see on the Island. We have recommended this as a place for our family and friends to stay- you can't go wrong with Hale Hualalai!

We spent 3 nights at Waianuhea and didn't see how that experience could be topped, until we got to Hale Hualalai! For a fraction of the cost, we had a beautiful, QUIET room with separate sitting and kitchen area, first class bathroom with jacuzzi tub, and a private lanai overlooking the most amazingly beautiful scene. The house is only minutes from Kailua Kona and the beach-- but set high above the chaos in a tropical paradise: lush tropical forest, coffee trees (Lon grows and serves his own fabulous brew), fruit trees, I could go on and on. Lon is a fabulous host, but totally let us have our privacy. Oh, and the comments on his cooking are not exaggerated. Breakfast was AWESOME. We had a wonderful time on the Big Island, will certainly go back, and will ALWAYS stay at Hale Hualalai!!
