This place is a total rip off and a dump. We rented the one bedroom unit. Nearly ruined our vacation last summer. The cottages are dirty, hot, and have no working fans ( The caretaker explained to us that the owner sets them to turn so slowly, to save power) The sheets are ragged and did not smell clean. Our next door neighbor, anothe guest, was staying in the studio right beside us and said she had found pubic hair in her sheets when she arrived, and so came over to wash them at our place where we had a washer /dryer, but only after there was no response from the care taker about her problem.
The places are all in a subdivision, next to a chicken yard and it smells, and is noisy.
We spent one entire day waiting on a repairman for the repair of a plugged lav drain. We left later, soon after the sluggish toilet plugged up too, and the owner blamed us! We left a week of paid lodging behind us. The owner originally agreed to return part of the money, but then sent us a check that bounced!
This was the worst-ever accomodations in thirty eight years of travel, bar none. The owner seems to be a crack pot and a phoney, too. The websire is totally misleading, and full of aloha BS. The actual location is miles and miles from Pahoa and that is identified as the nearby location by a fake map. Beware!

"Last Summer" means 2006, but review was entered in 2007. I became the new owner JUly 2007. Since then, we have had nothing but compliments: cleanliness; new furnishings; helpful management-even to the point of driving one guest around that couldn't drive.
New dishes, new pots and pans; new bedding; new linens.
And CLEAN. My manager is fastidious to a fault!
And, we continue to keep our rates low - so families can aford to experience the real Hawaii that we love. To malign our rentals a year after they have been improved gives the wrong impression to poeple who could really enjoy their stay. BUT - East Hawaii is NOT for the poolside-$300/night crowd - who looks for a bargain, yet expects the very best anyway (we actually have the audacity to consider our rentals - among the best!). It is for people who appreciate the country and all it offers. The proximity to Red Road; Volcanoes Park; Hilo town-one of the most beautiful towns on earth; its beaches; observatory; wonderful parks and gardens; stunning scenery.
Yes, there are chickens - but a quarter mile away. And, yes you do have to travel 10-20 minutes to dine, and yes, while there are twelve kinds of fruit - they don't bear every day.
Our Policy: come - and if you don' t like our wonderful grounds and rental units (2- one bedrooms; 1 studio; 1-2 bedroom-all large units) then you can leave and we'll give you your money back.
And, if you have visited before, you'll see the difference, including more landscaping planned to add to the dozens of palms and ginger and bird of paradise and night blooming jasmine and - it's a lush garden/orchard.
