“Very impressed...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

I'm really surprised at some of the comments. We dined in on 3 different occasions, 1 of them being Valentines eve, and each time we dined there, we had excellent service and enjoyed a very delicious dinner! On Valentines eve, we "popped" in and was asked if we had reservations. Of course we didn't, but they asked us if we would mind sitting on the outside. Which we didn't mind. So they seated us outside, and the service was just as fast, and just as good as if we were seated inside. Our waitress was very good in checking in on us to see if we wanted more tea (light green tea perfectly steeped) because it was a little chilly outside. The food was just as I expected from a fine dining Japanese restaurant. Miyo's has become one of our favorite places to eat.

“One of my favorites!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

I've loved this restaurant since it first opened. In order to get to it's old spot, you needed to climb about twenty, narrow steps then negotiate it's screened doorway. It was always busy and full, but it's view overlooking Wailoa River and Hilo Bay made it worth it. Oh, and the food is awesome too. It's new spot off of Manono St. is way easier to get to in that there's no more steps. But, being more accessible to more of our elderly makes it much more difficult to just walk up and get a table. You really should make reservations before heading down. You will not be disappointed, I promise. It seems like no matter what you order, you are going to love it. My favorite is their Sesame Chicken and Shrimp Tempura combination. Their homemade dressing they use for their salad is amazing. Be prepared because these are freshly cooked meals. That being said, it will take some time for your meals to show up, but it'll be hot and tasty. If you get a chance to eat here, don't pass it up.

“no views but same hearty food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

Miyo's serves up Japanese food that fills you up, donburi and combo dishes which are flavorful and stomach filling. And yes, even for lunch you might be wise to make reservations because "new" restaurants in Hilo are insanely popular. Miyo's new site is kitty corner from tourist haven Big Island Candies but it truly is a local kine of spot, e.g. greasy tables. Ninety five year old in our party had veggie tempura, other person ordered squid and eggplant entree and I got the deep fried oyster donburi. At least two of us completely cleaned up our bowls and we even had room for a shared dish of Hilo made ginger ice cream.

“Mixed experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

First visit to the new location, which was clean with lots of convenient parking. Small glitch upon arrival was having been told upon reserving a table that they opened at 5:20 (with first serving commencing at 5:30) when they actually did not open the door until 5:30. We stood on the sidewalk with an ever growing crowd, but it was only 10 minutes, so no big deal. We were quickly seated and the order was taken by a friendly and efficient server. Miso soup was a bit gritty and bland. Two of the three main courses were underseasoned, even by Japanese standards, but the third (grilled ahi with sauteed eggplant) was excellent. The beef and veggie sizzling hot pot was the worst, being very bland and watery. I would go again, hoping that they are still working out the kinks from the recent move. Reservations are a must. We were there at dinner opening and they were already telling walk-ups that there was a two hour wait.

“Sometimes bigger is not always better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

Went to the new Miyo's location for the first time yesterday (1/21/13). As a long time resident of the Big Island we had frequented Miyo's at their old location for many years and it was actually one of our favorite places to eat in Hilo town.

It appeared that the kitchen staff was unprepared and unable to get out the food to the tables in a timely manner yesterday. We were seated quickly and our server was excellent as always however after receiving our miso soup we had to wait approximately 30 minutes before our entree was served. My wife and I both ordered the daily special which was a simple dish so there was absolutely no reason that our food should have taken so long to be served. We are hopeful that this was a one time occurence and will give them another chance at the new location but if this turns out to be the new normal we will have to cross this restaurant off our list of favorites.
