Let me start off by saying that after reading some of the other reviews not sure where they started or went to. This trail starts off of Saddle Road, the "parking lot" is between mile marker 22 and 23 on the left if you are coming from Hilo. The round trip mileage we did was about 11 miles. It starts through a forest reserve and you are soon onto lava fields with kīpukas every mile or so. The kīpukas contain beautiful birds and nice lush terrain. After about 5 miles, the trail ends and you can turn right to make a loop onto Power Line Road. This part of the hike is more strenuous and seems to last forever, despite the sign which reads 3.5 miles. This road leads you to
Saddle Road where you will turn left and hike one mile back to the parking lot.
