Our flight arrived after 10pm so we needed a place nearby to stay for one night. The location is good and this seemed to be the nicest hotel in the loop.

The room was clean but needed updating, and was pretty large for a regular hotel, with 2 double beds and lanai large enough for two chairs. We were the last unit down the hall (furthest from the elevator), and it was still noisy after midnight and we were awoken around 6am. In addition to updating, it needs some soundproofing!

Being on the end gave us additional windows on one side, which looked out over the bay. I was too tired to take pics of the room when we arrived but I took one from the lanai before we checked out. If staying for more than one night, or spending lots of time in the room, it would be worth it to pay extra for the ocean view and ask for a high floor.

The location for this hotel is PERFECT, it's very close to the airport and just one or two turns onto the road that takes you to the Volcano National Park. It was only about 30-45 minutes away too - just great.

OK, yes, the hotel can use some updating and it seems outdated, but for our stay it was just great. It's definitely the nicest place on the block that's for sure.

The AC worked just fine. The ocean view was very pretty, it was relaxing to sit on the balcony at watch the sun rise.

The one thing that I remember is that there is no light in the sink portion of the bathroom so if you got up in the middle of the night you had to turn on a bright light to light the toilet & then the sink part - not very smart when someone was still sleeping.

The bed was pretty comfortable. The concierge were very friendly and the front desk staff were even willing to share some of their knowlege. Parking was very decent, we were able to find parking no matter what time of day/night we got back.

There was a small convenient mart practically next door and they serve ice cream too. Right in front of the hotel is a coffee store, they closed too early so we went in one morning before we set out for the day.

If you need a place to stay for a quick visit I'd certainly recommend the Hilo Hawaiian.

Standard large hotel - clean, comfortable, air conditioned, cable TV, two double beds. Not very memorable (lacks personality), but it provides all the neccessities as a base to explore the volcanoes national park.
Located next to a nice Japanese style park, waterfront and on the main hotel strip. You really need a car to get around in Hilo, so keeping this in mind, location is probably as good as you can get.

“great spot in Hilo”

Heard this was an older hotel and older area of town, but it was great. Large rooms, clean, staff all friendly, Queen's Court restuarant nothing fancy but had good food and great view. Was a nice place to stay while checking out the volcano, gardens and falls on this side of island. Would definitly come back if able to come here again.

Stayed overnight at the Castle Hilo Hawaiian February 2, 2007. The hotel hallways smelled musty. Wallpaper in the room was peeling in spots. We had upgraded to a deluxe oceanview room the view was good, except we were only on the 4th floor and the palm trees blocked our view past the jetty. But this was certainly no deluxe room. It didn't look like there were many better choices though, Hilo could use a coat of new paint. We did find a couple of great restaurants there. The Cafe Pesto downtown was delicious and a good deal and "What's Shakin' " (smoothies and wraps) North of Hilo on the scenic route, had the best of both. Also, the Hilo Farmer's Market was just astounding: the cheapest, most lovely flowers and the cheapest, most delicious fruit I've ever seen. Bags of papayas were $2! Hilo was worth the trip just for that market.
