“Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

This was a terrific hotel to stay at in Hilo. Very comfortable and clean. Great location, too. Not far from the main town area, and plenty of good areas to walk. We love staying there. The staff is great, too!

Room Tip: Stay on the 4th or 5th floor, to avoid smokers on the higher floors.

Rooms are really dated and worn, aircon is quite loud and sound isolation is poor - earplugs during sleeping recommended. Hotel really needs some renovation, hopefully theyll do it because location is good.

I love this hotel. It is so nice to stay in and close to so many things. The room is nice and the bed is so comfortable. Always a warm welcome. I know the coqui frogs are a pset but I like to hear their call and with all the landscaping they must love it there too. Clean comfortable room for a really reasonable price.

Room Tip: You have choices of the Banyon side or the ocean side. Both are fine. Even being on the Banyan side...

This is touted the premier hotel in Hilo. The furniture in the rooms must be 30 years old, photos to follow. Staff could care less about the guests, we checked in late and they acted like we were disturbing them. The rooms are clean, the lobby is nice, but everything else is just down and dated. If there is some event at the hotel, parking for guests is a struggle. Hotel restaurant is over priced and the food is average. Half the washers and dryers in hotel laundry did not work and all machines are on their lastt legs. Place has not been keptt up, guess they don't care how bad the laundry looks. If you have stayed in a nice place on the Kona side, don't expect it in Hilo.

Room Tip: Higher floors keep the sounds of the frogs away. Floors 2,4,6, have ice machines, others have been r...

I would say this hotel must have been really something in its heyday, which has clearly passed on by now. It can use some remodeling with a fresher look and newer furniture. Thats not to say the hotel is bad, but its very basic. Do not expect any frills.
Its clean and quiet, with free parking. Its located on Banyan Drive - aptly named for all the beautiful Banyan trees lining the road. The hotel is also adjacent to the Liliuokalani Gardens, which is a great place to go for a stroll/run and take in the splendor of Hilo Bay. There is also a koi pond with beautiful fish on premises.
The hotel is also very close to the airport.
There are plenty of restaurants in the area, we chose not to eat at the one on premises since the prices seemed steep (eg $7 for a cup of coffee).
Would stay here again.

The room was nice & clean. The bed was very comfortable. There is a small lanai which we used rarely, since it seemed other guests were smoking on their lanais. The room was a decent size, we had more than enough room to spread out all our stuff. The room seemed to have been recently remodeled, there was new wall paper & new paint. There was basic amenities: shampoo, hair conditioner, soap & body lotion. There was also a coffee maker in the room...there was no refrigerator or hair dryer, but since we were there for only a couple of days, it didn't really matter. There was really good sound proofing in the room...I couldn't really hear other guests or the coqui frogs....If the glass door wasn't as heavy or if there were louvered windows the noise of the frogs and the traffic would have come through loud & clear.

Room Tip: we had a "garden" view room (fine view of the front parking area) which was adequate for o...

We stayed there for 3 nights and all of the staff members of the hotel were very friendly and helpful. It was next to a Liliuokalani Gardens and Coconut island so it was a nice place to just walk and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the ocean. It was very relaxing. We had breakfast there and the buffet was fine. The location is also excellent: close to the airport and to the Farmers' Market in downtown Hilo.
