“okay property”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2012

Found the front desk to be very accommodating and helpful. We had two adjoining oceanview rooms as requested (on the fourth floor). It was very enjoyable to watch the cruise ships coming in in the morning. We stayed for one night while we were exploring the east side of the island. We didn't eat there as we arrived late and left early. The hotel has great views out the ocean side and has so much architectural potential. The rooms were clean but were very outdated. Fridges worked but I've never seen such old ones. A major renovation could make it a spectacular property however we found it very acceptable for our purposes. I wouldn't have wanted to stay here for any length of time. When we were checking in, airline crew were checking in as well and I always find that to be a good indication that the property is going to be okay. We paid just over $100/night between Christmas and New Year's.

Room Tip: We liked the oceanview rooms although ours were on the shady side of the hotel. Would have been nic...

Awesome place to stay in. The ocean facing rooms are just too good withthe view of Coconut Island, Ocean, and Mauna Kea. The ambience is very serene be it the banyan Drive or the Ocean side. If you are on the weekends do not miss out on the grand seafood buffet. it is of top quality right from the king crabs to the wine. Also the breakfast is sumptuous.

Stayed two night here to do the Volcano tour as well as avoid the APEC closures and hassles in Oahu. Found the hotel a 3 star equivalent - it was clean and reasonably quiet. Many domestic Hawaiin tourists use it. Exec Chef was the originator of the restaurant at Regent Hotel (Now Four Seasons) in Sydney and was very passionalte. We found the buffet meals quite good. It is not a hotel on a par with the hotels of Maui or Oahu, but it is also not a majpr tourist are - it is the wet side of Big Island, but I recommend it a a little different. We had no issues, nothing to complain of and would go back.

Room Tip: Anything on the bay front side is best, higher for better views but no really that important.

There is not a great deal of choice of accommodation in Hilo, so we went for the hotel on the seashore oiption. The hotel is in a nice position amongst parkland, right on the waters edge. The hotel needs a serious makover, it apparently has had one in the lobby area recently but the corridors and guest rooms are all very tired and well worn. The air con was noisey and smelled musty and the finish in the rooms was very dated especially the bathroom. There was no inroom safe and no minibar. The view was very nice and the balcony was a good size. The staff were ok at the front desk, but somewhat confused in the dining room, our food was lukewarm when we got it and it was a souless experience in the restaurant. This could be a nice hotel, but it needs a lot of investment in the halls and guest rooms, which feel old and tired.

Room Tip: All the rooms need to be upgraded and redecorated. Rooms at ocean side are quieter and have a nice v...

We stayed here for two nights after attending a conference at the Hilton Waikoloa. We stayed at 4 different hotels during our 10 days but the Hilton was the only hotel we would not stay at again.

Pros: Location: We found it a good base for driving into Volcano National Park. The bar downstairs was okay with a nice view but lacked Hawaiiana. Hotel View: great view on the bay and nice area for morning jog or walking in the evening. We booked a bay view room on the advice of other tripadvisor reviewers and that was excellent. Parking was good. Cleanliness: our room was clean. Hallways, elevators and lobby were clean. Did not use housekeeping.

Con: well, we had higher hopes for the bar. Rooms were tired and dated.

Room Tip: Hilo Bay view room if you will be there to enjoy it at all.

We stayed the night in Hilo as we had spent the day exploring Volcano National Park. We booked a room at this hotel because it was the best choice for the price (around $100/night). Our first room faced the front of the hotel and was a little dark so we ended up "upgrading" for $15 to a Bay Front room which was worth it. The carpet was worn, the bed spreads were those old polyester type, and the room in general was quite dated. However, they did have flat screen TVs in the room and good cable TV. The staff was pleasant and professional. We also enjoyed the $37 buffet dinner (we were there on a Friday) that had prime rib and crab legs. The executive chef at this restaurant was working behind the buffet and was very friendly. He was sincere about wanting to make sure you were enjoying the dinner. If you feel like indulging, I would recommend tis hotel buffet dinner. Given the relatively low price and lack of great choices in Hilo, I would stay at this hotel again if I had to go to Hilo. My advice if you're doing the Volcano Park for the day is to drive to a nicer resort in Kona. You're not missing much if you miss out on Hilo.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a bay front room, even for a small upgrade charge.
