We stopped here on the advice of a ranger I spoke to when visiting the volcano park. COMPLETELY AWESOME ADVICE! If you don't like the idea of the dark, or caves don't go. You can go just in the entrance but you won't get the full effect unless you go all the way in. Do not wear flip flops or sandals! Sneakers at a minimum and hiking shoes are best especially due to the water in there. There is basically a shallow stream running through it so waterproof shoes would be best. You will also need some good flashlights. I say multiple flashlights because if you go in a long way and your batteries go dead you will not be happy. It is COMPLETELY pitch black in there. I had 3 flashlights on me plus everyone else had their own with fresh batteries. I also would echo the advice of others and wear a hat if not a helmet of some kind. There are a couple of places you need to duck low to continue on and can bang your head. Just be careful! I am told you can go in the left side for a mile? Not sure but we did go quite a ways before turning back. An amazing lava tube with fascinating structures in it that you can just imagine it being full of flowing lava! Highly recommended and only a short distance from Hilo. Make sure to stop and turn off the lights at some point to experience total darkness!
